The Face of Marriage Inequality (Out-of-State Edition)

by: Dean Barker

Wed Apr 08, 2009 at 18:59:20 PM EDT

Coming to a TeeVee set near you, the out-of-state haters trying to tell us how to run our lives (h/t Ben Smith). All that's missing from this laughable piece of phony fear is actual fire and brimstone:

Do you like how it says briefly in tiny print that "The stories these actors are telling are based on real incidents."  Nice. I suppose you could describe The Office that way too, huh, or any piece of fiction loosely "based" on the real life.

You may remember these well-funded haters, the National Organization for Marriage, back when they ran an odious radio ad during the House debate on HB436.

UPDATE: OMG this audition tape Brian Rater found is funny:

And I can guarantee you no actors playing out scenes "based" on real life populate my Face of Marriage Equality series.

Audition Tapes (4.00 / 1)
These people are actors.  The audition tapes are on youtube.  It's utterly amazing how many California doctors are also Massachusetts parents.

Oh lawd (4.00 / 1)
I have yet to understand the "OMFG they taught my kid that gay people can marry! How dare they!" argument.

You can make a faith-based claim that pi equals 3 (I Kings 7:23), but they teach kids in school that it's an IRRATIONAL number! They're confusing our kids!

What possible argument is there against teaching children reality? Isn't that what education is supposed to be?

That is so over the top, it plays like a Saturday Night Live skit.

Love the end of days (4.00 / 1)
sort of imagery... more dog whistle stuff.

NOM's response to the "attack" (0.00 / 0)
Just one big tu quoque.

http://www.nationformarriage.o...

"HRC's record of truth and honesty about their intentions is not that impressive. They once said marriage amendments weren't necessary because there were no federal court cases. Now there is one."

"They called us liars when we said public schools will teach about gay marriage if its the law--but they do in Massachusetts. Serious religious liberty scholars from Eugene Volokh to Doug Laycock to Robin Wilson acknowledge the central driving idea behind gay marriage--there is no difference between same-sex and opposite sex unions and supporters of marriage are engaging in discrimination if they think differently--will have consequences for the freedoms of traditional faith communities. To pretend otherwise is to be profoundly unserious--if not deceptive--about what gay marriage means."

Bad ad. (0.00 / 0)
Thought this would lift some spirits. Not about NH, but about the whole situation.

can't embed it, but here's the link

I know i've been on this right wing terrorism thing (4.00 / 3)
For a bit. But I find the fact that these metaphors and rhetorical flourishes -- the coming storm, vampire killers, and the fetishization of the founding fathers as essentially religious figures (and especially the fetishization of their civil violence) -- these things were once the calling cards of the Christian Patriot/Skinhead crowd, the province of the McVeighs of the world, and maybe the fundamentalist end-of-days crowd.

Theae terms and metaphors are now the core rhetoric of the Republican party. And while the attempts are laughable in some respects, there is clearly a gravitation to that rhetorical universe...it's freaky to watch this happen at this rate. It's like we are where we were on April 18, 1995, but now racing ahead, because 9/11 has somehow made us forget where this sort of talk leads.

Thou shalt not lie (0.00 / 0)
These people (and I use this term loosely) have forgotten what is in the Ten Commandments

I can't find it now, (0.00 / 0)
but yesterday I saw a release (HRC?) that went through the lies on this ad one by one with devastating clarity.
