Carol Shea-Porter Snags Shirley Chisholm Award

by: Dean Barker

Sat Apr 11, 2009 at 07:31:43 AM EDT

This is awesome. Via email:
Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter has received the distinguished Shirley Chisholm Award from the New England Educational Opportunity Association (NEOA). The Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment and active support for students served by TRIO Programs. The Federal TRIO Programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

"Congresswoman Chisholm said that service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth," said Congresswoman Shea-Porter. "I am honored to receive this award and will keep fighting to ensure that students of all backgrounds can take part in the American Dream."

As a Member of the Education and Labor Committee, Congresswoman Shea-Porter has a strong record of supporting education.  Last year, the Congresswoman was honored by the University of New Hampshire for her support of Upward Bound, which is part of TRIO and is the Federal program that helps high school students succeed in higher education.

And there's a AP mention here.

What was especially nice is that this news prompted me to learn more about Shirley Chisholm herself.  Wow - just wow.  Reminds me a lot of another Congresswoman, come to think of it.

What a great honor. (0.00 / 0)
Kudos to Carol for her work on behalf of kids.

I was fortunate enough to meet and talk with Shirley Chisholm along with a small group of fellow college students in the early 70s, and I was blown away. She was an amazing powerhouse, one of the most dynamic and eloquent women I have ever met. She would have made a great president.

Not to detract from Shea-Porter's well deserved honor, nor the year-in and (0.00 / 0)
year-out efforts of the New England Educational Opportunity Association, but the Associated Press mention with the prohibition that the material not be
published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

is beyond insulting since the material was clearly provided to the Associated Press in a press release that they received gratis.

I don't think the AP is deserving of a link.

Also, if you don't mind my saying so, it would be nice to (0.00 / 0)
headline the event in terms of the organization making the award, rather than CSP "snagging" some low-hanging fruit or getting a run in her hose.

I didn't blockquote them (0.00 / 0)
for that reason.

They AP has become the King of Stoopid in a sizeable realm of stoopid plans and decisions recently from the tradmed.

A very interesting discussion on this very topic (0.00 / 0)
with AP's Curley (representing stoopid) and none other than Arianna H. (representing reality) on last Wednesday's Charlie Rose show can be viewed here.

Arianna actually comes just short of saying "stoopid" out loud, but you can certainly tell what she's thinking!
