SD-3: Results Thread

by: Dean Barker

Tue Apr 21, 2009 at 19:43:12 PM EDT

Totals are starting to come in via the Laconia Citizen. I'll update as I see it:

FINAL TOTAL: Bradley 5,996 , Martin 3,789

And James Pindell has put together a comparison spreadsheet from the GE in '08 here. And Andrew has one here as well.

So involuntarily retired pro baller Bush League Bradley decides to play a high school game on his home turf and wins with the bleachers 3/4 empty and on a field that has never once gone to the opponent.  Tomorrow that reality will be spun by John H. and the Union Leader as the Comeback of the Republican Party in New Hampshire.

My only question is: since this is obviously a perch from which Jeb can rehabilitate another vanity run for the national stage, how on earth are they going to come up with a nominee set now with so many re-treads in the running (Jeb, Charlie, Horn, Sununu) and Guinta knocking at the door?

More: In an effort to prevent this from happening again, help me game out the likeliest next special election and the NHGOP nominee.  Some initial thoughts:

HD-378: Judd Gregg
Selectman: Charlie Bass
School Board: Craig Benson

How many votes are expected to be cast? (4.00 / 1)

I'd be surprised if it was 1/4th (4.00 / 1)
of the GE numbers, but I don't know what those are for the towns involved.

[ Parent ]
Should be low (4.00 / 1)
I believe its spring vacation week as well for some public schools? Plus its been raining all day.

[ Parent ]
It will be interesting (4.00 / 1)
to go back later and compare percentages to the GE percentages.

I'll Start a Diary For That Now n/t (4.00 / 4)

Looks Like Pindell Beat Me To The Punch (4.00 / 1)
I'll concede to him over on facebook

[ Parent ]
Yes, but both you and he (4.00 / 2)
were about 80 times faster than I would have been.

Thanks!

No Prob! (0.00 / 0)
I prefer things like this.

If there's some crazy way a person can be a legislator and a journalist and make a living, i'll be the one to find it out, but until then I can come close with things like doing spreadsheets like these.

Bradley (4.00 / 1)
The Union Leader is reporting that Bradley is ahead 5793 to 3653 with only the small town of Freedom yet to report.

Turnout was about 1/4 to 1/5 of the general election, so this is really a reflection of the two party's bases in that region more than a reflection of the independent vote.

article (4.00 / 1)
The returns were supplied by the Bradley campaign.

Top notch reporting by the UL

The Boros are tough (4.00 / 2)
Wolfe-, Tufton- and Moulton- boros are really, really Republican.

[ Parent ]
Agreed: but let's make plans to change that! (4.00 / 6)
Not that we can do it overnight. But I plan to keep running for a House seat here in the 'boros. Every time, the hardline Republicans get fewer votes, and we get more. It would be nice to accelerate the trend a bit.

voter turnout (4.00 / 2)
On average, Bradley is getting 41% of the voter turnout that Denley got and Martin is getting 29% of the turnout that he got in the general.

Keeping in mind that this has been a Republican district for as far back as I could find records, it should not be surprising that the Republican base would be larger.  It's just too difficult to get independent voters out when the balance of power is not at stake.  Even most party members in both parties stayed home, which is typical in a special election.

[ Parent ]
With all final results in... (4.00 / 2)
Bradley got 42.4% of Denley's vote and Martin got 30.4% of his previous vote.

[ Parent ]
When was the last time this district had a Democratic State Senator? (4.00 / 2)

never n/t (4.00 / 1)

[ Parent ]
Never that I can see (4.00 / 1)
I found general election results going back to 1998 and Republicans always won this district.  Last November was the first time that any Democrat had even gotten close to winning.  Even with the big Democratic tidalwave in 2006, the Republican won this seat by a fairly comfortable margin.

It should be noted that Carol Shea-Porter carried these towns (just barely) last November, but that was with large voter turnout.

Big Thanks (0.00 / 0)
Big thanks to everyone who worked to help Bud Martin. This was always going to be a tough race. It stinks that Sununu will run around claiming that this means something, but the reality is, nothing has changed, and all that it means is that it remains a hard district for Democrats.

Thanks to all who canvassed and called (4.00 / 1)
It was fun to come back from bringing coffee to Bud who stood in the rain for hours, to find key Sierra Club folks, joining local activists dialing for votes in my office.  I feel really good about the effort we made to support Bud and his growth as a candidate.  I didn't foresee being blown out of the water like this.  We lost a significant educators vote due to school vacations but that only explains a small part of this gap.

[ Parent ]
Much too optimistic (4.00 / 1)
You think the Union Leader is going to wait until tomorrow? They're already pimping it. Complete with error, by the way:

Mike Brunelle, executive director of the state Democratic Party, said Republicans had never won the District 3 seat, which comprises towns in the eastern-central portion of the state. He also said the turnout was low.

I suspect that Mike said nothing of the sort, since it's Democrats who have never won the seat, hence making it not too surprising (if mildly disappointing) to have that trend continue.

Sununu managed to find a mildly clever spin on it, though, not as easily rebutted as that: he promptly made it into an attack on John Lynch, demanding he veto anything coming out of the legislature that's more modern than the 19th century.

IT for John Lynch '04 and NHDP '08 - I'm liking my track record so far!

In that story... (4.00 / 3)
Sununu called marriage equality "garbage".

What an ass. That really makes me angry. In fact, I can't remember being this angry over something political in a long, long, time.*

Next Stop: 2010 (4.00 / 3)
In 2010, we won't have George W. Bush on the ballot as we (essentially) had in 2006, and we won't have Barack Obama on the ballot as we did in 2008.  So results of those years, and any comparisons, will be a memory of the past.

It could be a tough year for our Democrats statewide -- and to win, we have to produce for our base, and get them out to vote.

ALL the more reason why our Democrats in the New Hampshire Legislature have to pass issues such as marriage equality and transgender protections, as well as come up with a quality balanced budget that provides the safety-net our constituency needs in the coming months of further economic difficulties, and another winter of cold.

Democrats have to be Democrats -- and that's what our supporters from 2006 and 2008 expect.  We have to deliver, not duck.

As for Bud Martin, he put his heart into this race, but it was a tough district.  He, and Ray and Mike and so many others who worked hard, did what they could.  All the more reason we continue the good causes.

maybe not a perch (4.00 / 3)
My only question is: since this is obviously a perch from which Jeb can rehabilitate another vanity run for the national stage, how on earth are they going to come up with a nominee set now with so many re-treads in the running (Jeb, Charlie, Horn, Sununu) and Guinta knocking at the door?

Maybe not. Maybe it's a way of getting a proven loser out of the way. He's been officially downsized.

'Downsized.' (0.00 / 0)
I like that way of referring to it.
