Medical Marijuana Passes!

by: RealNRH

Wed Apr 29, 2009 at 12:38:16 PM EDT

The Senate has just passed medical marijuana by 14-10. I don't know if it was a party-line vote, but considering that the party line would be 14-10, it seems quite likely. If that was the case, then this would appear to be the Union Leader choosing to downplay the Democratic role in passing something the U-L had itself advocated for in an editorial just a few days ago.

Sadly, the transgender rights bill was shot down 24-0 after a successful right-wing smear campaign by the Potty Of No.

Off to Governor Lynch (0.00 / 0)
Hopefully this will be an easy one for him to sign.

IT for John Lynch '04 and NHDP '08 - I'm liking my track record so far!

Lynch "has concerns" about it (4.00 / 3)
It sends a bad message to the children.

I'm concerned that the message we want to send to the children is that we have no compassion for the chronically and terminally ill. We treat our pets better than our sick people.

Almost party-line (4.00 / 2)
If I heard correctly, Senators DeVries (D-Manchester) and Gallus (R-Berlin) were on opposites sides of their respective party caucuses on the medicinal marijuana bill.

Alderman-elect, City of Manchester (Ward Six)

I'll take it. (4.00 / 1)
Democrats mostly in the right on this issue, with a little crossing over to keep it interesting. Any chance of Gallus or other Republicans crossing over on gay marriage too?

Gallus was a co-sponsor (4.00 / 2)
of the medical marijuana bill, for which I do give him a lot of credit, since he had to buck his party to do so.

It's one of the few times I've been pleased with my state senator.

Barnes and Ayotte (4.00 / 2)
On the senate floor, Jack Barnes said we should listen to the experts: the Attorney General.
The governor needs to understand that the experts are medical people, not law enforcement!
I forget which senator today told the story of a woman under chemo who could get opiates legally but could not then function as a mother. With marijuana she got relief and could be a functioning mother.
This is the kind of message Lynch must hear.

No'm Sayn?

Given the amount of disinformation (4.00 / 2)
that assistant AG Karin Eckels disseminated at the senate hearing, I have grave doubts as to the level of expertise coming from Ayotte's office. It was embarrassing to hear Ms.Eckels  natter on about how 6 plants would yield between 6-30 lbs. of pot.

On the other hand, I have yet to speak with a doctor who is against it.

Taking a page out of our southern neighbor's book (0.00 / 0)
Seems like the governor definitely needs to hear from patients and doctors but he also to needs to hear something that directly refutes the nonsense coming from Ayotte.

Not to suggest that we should decriminalize or that total decriminalization and legalizing for medical use are at all the same thing but I think we can take a page out of Mass's book from the decriminalization battle.

There were some very effective statements from retired police officers leading up to the vote on the MA marijuana ballot question. Basically they were saying that freeing up resources would allow the police to concentrate on stopping violent crime, marijuana users weren't particularly dangerous, it would save the state money in the long run etc. etc. It is hard to refute the expertise of seasoned law enforcement officers.

I wonder if we could find any retired cops who are sympathetic to the cause of alleviating suffering up here in the Granite State. I say retired because I imagine that to come out against the AG on an issue like this would most likely put the officer in a very difficult position and our men and women in blue already make enough sacrifices for the common good.

What an awesome day... (4.00 / 2)
Medical cannabis and marriage equality pass, and I STILL Don't have to wear a seatbelt!

Funny Guy... (0.00 / 0)
...but you SHOULD decide to use that seatbelt so you'll stay alive to fight the next battle.  By the way, Democrats can legally adopt Republicans.
