The Republican Party needs a new name

by: Michael Marsh

Wed May 13, 2009 at 15:28:19 PM EDT

The Republican National Committee is holding an emergency session next week. Normally this would be about as interesting and newsworthy as a meeting of the East Overshoe Odd Fellows, but it's different this time. That's because this curious mix of buffoons, dinosaurs and wit-crackers intends to pass a resolution demanding that the Democratic Party change its name. They are insisting that we must forthwith be known as the Democrat Socialist Party.  This should be a joke. It isn't.

With all that ails the GOP, it would reasonable to expect the party's leaders to turn inward and try to find a set of common principles and beliefs they can regroup around. But "reasonable" is not in their job description, and instead they are pushing this bit of nonsense. So since they are insisting we change our name, we need to come up with a new name for them.

My personal choice would be the New Whigs, since they seem to be madly rushing down the path taken by that party.

If this were to catch on, I might have to learn to touch type the top row of keys on a QWEERTY keyboard.

The Know-Nothing Party (4.00 / 1)
The right wing in this country has a long history of using freedom fries faux-patriotism as a political weapon to drive a platform of ignorance and social backwardness.  The historical "Know-Nothing" Party was formally called "The American Party".

Plutocratic Party (0.00 / 0)
That is really their raison d'etre.
Government of, by, and for the very rich.
It is that simple.

No'm Sayn?

No, it isn't. (4.00 / 1)
At least that would be coherent, and maybe even stable.  Their platform is not based on promoting the rich; it's based on peddling ignorant nonsense.  Think about it.  It seems pretty clear to me that George Walker Bush truly believes that the things he does are right and righteous for the reasons he gives.  Their leaders are believers, we can't forget that.

Two Mints in One! (0.00 / 0)
It's both!

Replacing inconvenient truth with, as you say "ignorant nonsense," is vital for the aristocracy to maintain its power.

When W talked about promoting freedom, he sincerely meant freedom for the big corporate interests to rake in the cash without the bother of labor or environmental regulations. That really is what he meant. It's a very old concept of governing. It absolutely depends on keeping the populace feeling powerless.

The big corporate interests (0.00 / 0)
are hurting pretty bad as a result of the Bush administration. There are political factors that led to this shitty economy. So if his goal was to help corporate interests rake in the cash, he was pretty incompetent at achieving that.

I disagree. (4.00 / 1)
For all the legitimate criticisms of George W. Bush--and I have more than I care to attempt listing--one thing I give him credit for is that I think he truly believes he's doing the right thing at every turn.  He thinks he's telling the truth; he thinks he's on the right side.  I wouldn't say the same of Cheney, but the former President is not an evil genius; my impression is that he was in way over his head and allowed the people around him, the gatekeepers of his bubble, to manipulate him.

And that is the difference.  There are Cheneys and there are Bushes.  I'm inclined to think the true believers are more problematic.

actually "Socialist" is... (0.00 / 0)
"Socialist" actually IS the adjective socialist parties use to refer to themselves.  To be fully consistent, the Republicans should be demanding that the Democrats change their party's name to the Democrat Social Party.

A small change (0.00 / 0)
Given the ongoing GOP civil war between the crazy and less-crazy Republicans, they shall henceforth be known as the Republican Parties.

IT for John Lynch '04 and NHDP '08 - I'm liking my track record so far!
