Not Normally the New Hampshire Tradition...

by: Dean Barker

Sat Jun 06, 2009 at 04:00:00 AM EDT

...to wait on the Sununu dynasty to decree what office you shall run for and label that waiting game "tradition":
"I'm still actively and seriously considering running for the Congress or for the Senate. I'm nowhere near, however, to making a decision," Bass said. "It's not normally been the New Hampshire tradition that people run for these offices for two straight years."

"Normal" traditions (4.00 / 4)
Right, the "normal" tradition was for the son of a former elected Republican official to just inherit an office. Guess that isn't working too well anymore!

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

I think Charlie was snarking on Little John (0.00 / 0)
He would be the one running for an office for two straight years.

The way I read it Charlie is obliquely noting, "Sununu LOST in 2008. We usually don't give a new nomination to a recent LOSER."

Read up, Charlie (0.00 / 0)
"I'm still actively and seriously considering running for the Congress or for the Senate. I'm nowhere near, however, to making a decision," Bass said. "It's not normally been the New Hampshire tradition that people run for these offices for two straight years."

Dartmouth has an excellent History department.  Obviously, Charlie didn't take many classes.  Off the top of my head, and excluding consecutive winning campaigns for the same office, here are a few "exceptions". . . .

Paul Hodes for Congress - '04, '06
Jeb Bradley for Congress - '06, '08
Mark Fernald for Governor - '00, '02
Bob Smith for Congress - '80, '82, '84
Medrim Thomson for Governor - '68, '70, '72
Wesley Powell for Governor - '56, '58
John Rauh for Senate - '90, '92

I'm sure that Ray, Kathy, Elwood, etc., could multiply this list. . . . I realize that Charlie got used to taking orders without thinking during his congressional days, but he should try to use his brain now (since Newt and Tom can't loan him theirs).

okay... (0.00 / 0)
I read Charlie's words to mean run a campaign that starts the year prior.

But yes, nominating the previous cycle's candidate or nominee happens a lot.

Hugh Gallen Governor 74, 76, 78.

Joe Keefe for Congress 88, 90

Paul McEachern for Governor 84, 86, 88

Bill Verge for Congress 92, 94

Louis Wyman for congress 64, 66

Doing my best to elect NH Democrats since 1968 and getting better at it every year!
