Bob Smith for Senate!

by: Dean Barker

Mon Jun 08, 2009 at 18:38:09 PM EDT

Too bad it's in Florida :-(
Looks like he's aiming straight for the teabaggers.

When I first watched this, I cried tears of joy. I mean, after all, he's got gobs of real US Senate experience compared to Crist and Rubio. This could be fun!

But then I realized that if Bob has any presence at all in this race, it'll be to the detriment of Rubio, which in turn will help Crist snag the nomination. If I could wave a magic wand and have Smith be the nominee, I would, (and boy would that be funny if Sununu runs again here) but the reality is that he might just make things ultimately harder for a Democratic victory in the general election.

I love Bob Smith (4.00 / 1)
I spent 14 months of my life researching and analyzing Bob Smith's record, and I learned this:

The man writes his own opposition research.

Dean, I'm willing to bet that Rubio won't waste his time attacking a guy who will be looking upwards at 1 percent. But, if he does, all he has to do is remind conservatives that this man -- who wants to move Republicans away "from the left" -- endorsed John Kerry for President.

hoo boy (4.00 / 1)
His party is moving to the left? He's going to take the country back from the "Democrat" left? He needs to get the talking points - he failed to mention socialism.

Same message, thinner combover.

This man was a damn US Senator... (4.00 / 1)
from our state. And he was re-elected. Unbelievable.

I could just about see him as an irascible state rep from one of the benighted corners of our state. One of the guys, he gets up to speak, half the House stands up to go out and take a break. That's as high a position as he could, or should, aspire to hold.

As the TV ad used to say, "We've come a long way, baby."

I have friends (0.00 / 0)
from other states who taunt me to this day about Bob's presidential run.

For those who have the stomach (its 27 minutes of the OLD, dyed, combover) heres Bob on Conservative Roundtable, explaining why he chose to run for President.

I like Bob Smith (4.00 / 1)
He is totally opposite of most things I believe in, but he has a heart. Really nice guy.

In a parallel universe, perhaps (0.00 / 0)
Kathy, the man cast one of only three Senate votes against the Ryan White AIDS bill, which provided life-saving drugs to impoverished sufferers of this disease.

Where was his heart then?

Not good on policy (0.00 / 0)
But I still like him.

There's a Reason the Party Whacked Him (4.00 / 1)
Because Bob Smith is for real. Sure he's a right wing whack job, but he wasn't a party hack like Sununu. He always meant what he said, as truly naive as it was. Another positive about Bob is that, had he been the Republican nominee in 2002, NH wouldn't have had to wait six years for Shaheen to be senator! Now let's hope Floridian Democrats get such a gift.

No'm Sayn?

He is honest. That goes a long way with me. (0.00 / 0)
When the rest of the state republican party was covering up the phone jamming, he wrote a blistering op-ed in the Monitor condemning it and condemning the response of the state republican party.

"But, in the unlikely story that is America, there has never been anything false about hope." Si se puede. Yes we can.

[ Parent ]
He had nothing to lose at that point (0.00 / 0)
. . . and was trying to get back at the Republicans who rejected him.

Was he honest when he ran for the Senate by campaigning against legislative pay hikes, and then voted for a midnight raise during his first year in office?

How about the times he slammed lawyers (such as you and Kathy) in his grandstanding for tort reform -- until his wife fell down a flight of stairs at the Washington Hilton, and he filed a lawsuit that far exceeded the punitive caps he sought to impose on others?

Bob Smith was pretty good at his "humble-man-from-the-hills" act, be he was worse than all of them.  Extremist?  Yes.  Hypocritical?  Most definitely.  Honest and nice?  I strongly disagree.

Legislative pay hikes are exclusively a feel-good issue. (0.00 / 0)
Members of Congress have to maintain two residences, it's a drop in the bucket of the federal budget, and raising their salaries only makes it easier for people who are not independently wealthy to be in Congress, hard as it is for them to get there.  If they didn't raise their own pay on a regular basis, it's just be more controversial when they had to do bigger raises less frequently.

That said, it doesn't make the hypocrisy okay.

I agree (0.00 / 0)
That said, it doesn't make the hypocrisy okay.

The pay raise was Smith's main issue during his last congressional term, as well as his Senate campaign.

And I have a big problem with anyone who votes to raise their own healthy six figure salary while, at the same time, backing legislation to abolish the minimum wage.

[ Parent ]
Fair point (0.00 / 0)
while, at the same time, backing legislation to abolish the minimum wage

I wouldn't do that either.

nice guys (4.00 / 1)
wouldn't  force women to be incubators. Nice guys wouldn't force a woman to bear the child of her rapist - but Smith would have.
