Walter Cronkite Gravely Ill

by: JimC

Fri Jun 19, 2009 at 13:15:27 PM EDT

TVNewser has learned legendary CBS newsman Walter Cronkite, 92, who once held the title of "Most Trusted Man in America," is gravely ill, according to multiple CBS News sources. The network began updating his obituary more than a week ago, a source adds.

http://www.mediabistro.com/tvn...

In an interview with this reporter in 2006, Cronkite was asked if he ever thought about death.

"When you get to be 89, you have to think about it a little bit. It doesn't prey on me, and it doesn't keep me awake nights. Occasionally, when I'm upset about something else, I think, 'My gosh, I don't know if I should do this or that because I'm not sure I'll be here that long to enjoy it.'"

I'm not sure what to add. When the time comes, I hope the remembrances are respectful, but not overly simplistic or overly nostalgic.

Cronkite denies it (0.00 / 0)
http://www.boston.com/ae/celeb...

"His condition is being grossly exaggerated," Cronkite's executive assistant Cynthia Dicrocco told us today. "He's dealing with the challenges of being a 92-year-old man."

One more thing (4.00 / 1)
The Boston.com story says TVNewser did not cite a source. No, it did not cite a named source.

according to multiple CBS News sources

So there's a rumor at CBS, and in denying it, they have to run down the blog. Nice.

I hope it's exagerrated and he has many years left (4.00 / 1)
but when he does pass on, the opportunity for media self-congratulation and examination will be something to behold.

Cronkite is the paragon of an age of journalism that I believe was always a lie: the era when the public and journalists themselves expected Objectivity from each mainstream news source rather than competition among different voices.

Murrow would have found that absurd, I suspect.

My point exactly (4.00 / 1)
There will be lots of tired comparisons of Cronkite to, say, Brian Williams. That's unfair to both of them.
