Sometimes, timing is everything with a light bulb moment. I was thinking this morning how often the conventional national press about Carol Shea-Porter is that she doesn't raise as much money as other House incumbents.
But what I don't hear in the press is how hardworking she is. Like how she just secured funding for Manchester's Gaslight District. (email release):
Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter today announced that her request for $1,000,000 to help revitalize the Gaslight District is included in the Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development Appropriations bill. The funding will be used for construction and streetscape improvements. The bill is expected to be on the House floor next week.
"This funding is important for new business development and will help create new jobs in Manchester," said Congresswoman Shea-Porter. "I am proud of New Hampshire's largest city and I look forward to seeing the continued revitalization of the Gaslight District."
Compare those Queen City priorities to the Mayor who wants to unseat her and his recent (in)activities.
One gets the sense, from the voluminous activity coming out of her congressional office, that when there's five minutes to spare, either to fundraise or to represent the first district, Carol more often chooses the latter.
This is a good thing! Yet at the same time, it makes her representation all the more important to protect. And that's where we can come in.
I've decided: every time I get an email or go here and see Carol working for us, I'm going to give a little to her. Now, I'm treading water most of the time, so my contributions will be almost insulting. But I think it's important, even if only symbolically, to show our gratitude for her public service as it is happening.
And if we all chime in, we could start to make a difference...
