Director Of Politics Jay-Z Donahue

by: Dean Barker

Mon Jul 27, 2009 at 07:27:14 AM EDT

Jennifer Donahue, Political Director, New Hampshire Institute Of Politics, says in her latest that we wouldn't be talking about the Gates thing if he weren't such a high profile black man. To persuade us of this she quotes multi-millionaire impresario celebrity entertainer Jay-Z.

Money quote:

No one is right, no one is wrong. If Crowley had gone to law school with Gates, he would have known not to arrest him too. Any person, white or black, who harshes out on an officer knows there's a downside.

That is all.

An order not to discriminate can lead to public servants treating (0.00 / 0)
everyone with disrespect.  Just as an order to de-segregate a municipal swimming pool can lead to its being shuttered to all.

As the saying goes, "there's more than one way to skin a cat."

Awk-ward.

On the whole though, at least the post does admit there are racial problems in America, particularly for people that are less connected than Gates.

I hate that argument (0.00 / 0)
That's what Digby was talking about.

What she's saying is merely true, but it's the "He knew what he was getting" argument, and I could offer dozens of analogies, but they would all be offensive.

Is anyone ever allowed to mouth off to a cop? In 1988, I watched the Missouri state campaign director -- Mark Longabaugh, perhaps known to some people here -- scream at a cop. The cop was standing next to a pro-life protestor who hung his arm in a sling, claiming he had been hurt by our 100-pound volunteer who had accidentally bumped into him.

The cop backed down.

yes he worked here for Bill Bradley n/t (0.00 / 0)

He screamed at lots of people, not just police officers.

I don't doubt it (0.00 / 0)
But he sure came in handy dealing with the cop. Nobody else on staff would have done that.

whether or not it's an example, it's a paradigm (4.00 / 3)
As a friend of mine pointed out, the issue is not whether this particular officer or this particular incident is a blatant example of racism.  The issue is that every black person has a story like this.

I think you missed the money quote:

There should not be two different world's [sic] for people of color. But there is: there's the one we just saw play out in the media, and another you never hear about, much bigger in population, and much less privileged.

Obama made the same larger point, although it was immediately lost in the soap.  Blacks and Latinos are stopped disproportionately by police.  It's a fact.
