NH-Sen: Fosters Fail

by: Dean Barker

Fosters Fail:
The newest installment of Ayotte attacks took her to task for remaining "quiet as health care debate nears in Senate."

Keep in mind, Ayotte is only considering a run for the U.S. Senate, the seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Judd Gregg.

"Today I filed the necessary paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) in order to form a candidate committee for the United States Senate. This is the next step in the legal process as I explore my potential candidacy for the race in 2010," Ayotte said in a statement at the time.

Note the words "explore" and "potential."

Seems to be written in plain English. However, apparently not plain enough for the communications director of the state Democratic Party.

Look at this FEC STATEMENT OF CANDIDACY filing from Ayotte. Seems to be written in plain English. But apparently not plain enough for the amateur hour over at Fosters.

090720 Ayotte Statement of Candidacy Adding: let's be clear about the strategy of the NHGOP and their state press organs. It's incredibly important to them to have as vague a candidate as possibe so that voters will not have to think too hard about the fact that Ayotte is, in fact, a Republican. So at every turn they will try to scream foul whenever someone is reckless enough to actually inquire what her positions are. This is all becoming such a Susan Collins II movie, directed by Judd Gregg. And it's beneath the dignity, imo, of Ms. Ayotte to be managed in such a way. Finally, it's incredibly revealing of what the GOP intend by running a female candidate compared to the Dems.

At the risk of being irksome, let me suggest that (0.00 / 0)
Republicans are all about exploration and potency and potency, in this day and age, is defined by money.  Rich people, regardless of where the money comes from, are powerful; and poor people, regardless of how they were deprived of their wages, are impotent.  That's just how the cookie crumbles in the wonderful world of the free market.

It's one thing for Foster's to declare, journalistically, that Ayotte is merely exploring the race and to treat the story as such. It's quite another to whack the NHDP for having a different view.

That said, she resigned "to explore a candidacy." What does Foster's need to declare her a candidate?

and at the same time... (0.00 / 0)
we have the uproar over the budget--- and she was the AG when Lynch came up with the idea of breaking open the medical malpratice fund piggybank.  In fact, I am sure she actually supported the idea.

Foster's likes Ayotte, so one way of defending her is to basically say any attacks on her are off limits until she is a declared candidate. It is silliness; she has filed a declaration of candidacy, giving up her right to hold stealth positions on the issues.

Effective journalism would entail calling Ms. Ayotte every day - well, maybe every other day - requesting an interview in order to ask her questions about the issues, and screaming loudly if she refuses to give an interview.  I'm pretty disappointed that the editors at Fosters are forgetting this is the news business, not the candidate protection business. At some point Kelly Ayotte has to break her radio silence, and if I were Foster's (or any paper), I would be trying to be the one with the first interview.
