Whiny WashPost Reporter Makes His Point: Respect the Genuine Article

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

OK, to be fair, Gawker does seem to deserve a bit of a smack here.

But the harm to Shapira and the Post? ZERO. Shapira even says so:

Even if I owe Nolan for a significant uptick in traffic, are those extra eyeballs helping The Post's bottom line?

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Our model doesn't work, and my job's in jeopardy! It's not our fault! Is your job in jeopardy, in this bull economy?!?

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah wah!

I want to (4.00 / 2)

I'd tell you (4.00 / 2)
But I can't think through my wall of tears.

What about the time (0.00 / 0)
Maureen Dowd plagiarized Josh Marshall? Did he sue? (Hey, I'd like her job, too...)

I suspect more to come n/t (0.00 / 0)

Former Gawker editor takes Shapira's side.

At first he felt flattered; then, ripped off.

He's right to feel that way. He was.

The blogosphere has done something weird to the media industry: Now, the imprimatur of having contributed something is not the original byline, but whether your piece was "picked up." Pickup provides that extra stamp of relevance, that what you did is worthy of inclusion by the all-important aggregators - the outlets which determine the days need-to-know stories, so busy people with no time to read any of it will at least know what's up. Yes, yes, congratulations on getting your little article published in a top national newspaper - but a Drudge/Romenesko/HuffPo/Gawker link? Awesome!

She's right; the ethics are really clear here, and Gawker was wrong. However, the response is telling in its ostentatiousness. A quiet call asking for attribution is what's called for, not a nearly 2,000 word piece in the Sunday paper.

And Shapira, by his own description, didn't feel ripped off until his editor began breathing down his neck.
