Lauren Dorgan is Leaving the Monitor

by: Dean Barker

Sun Aug 09, 2009 at 07:54:29 AM EDT

Sigh.
This week will be my last at the Monitor and writing Capital Beat. I am shipping off to graduate school at the Fletcher School of Diplomacy at Tufts, where I plan to study Arabic, economics and more.

If you're sad - or glad! - to see me go, or if you just like politics and beer, you're cordially invited to a bipartisan happy hour at the Barley House on Thursday night at 6. You can meet the indomitable Shira Schoenberg, who will be taking over the Capital Beat.

Ms. Dorgan's reporting was voluminous, detailed, unfailingly fair, and - best of all - completely lacking in that off-putting Gatekeeper veneer that characterizes so much political journalism today.

I wish Shira the best, and I look forward to seeing more of her work.

But I'm not going to sugar-coat it. This is a quantifiable loss for political journalism in New Hampshire, a state that, given its engaged citizenry, really lacks comprehensive state house coverage. Lauren Dorgan will be missed.

Best wishes to Ms. Dorgan (4.00 / 1)
This sounds like a pretty cool career step.

Her column has really given the Monitor credibility as a source for statewide political / policy coverage. I hope the paper can maintain and build on that.

One Of My Journalism Heroes... (0.00 / 0)
Very sad.  She was one of my journalism heroes -- because she was so detailed, thorough, analytical, and fair. Add to that intelligence and institutional memory and New Hampshire is losing an important reporter/writer.  The world is waiting for her other future contributions.

How many political reporters have the Monitor? (0.00 / 0)
Political reporters for the Monitor seem to last for only a few years and then go on to hopefully better pastures. Why? Is it the salaries, the quality and/or ambitions of the reporters, or is it something else?

Its the Primary (0.00 / 0)
They can pay less and say, 'see, you will move on to better things if we choose you to work here, because you will be known to national media through covering these events..."

for transparency sake ~I represent Union print shops

Particularly because they're a step above the UL.  National Media might not know how partisan the Union Leader is in general, but they certainly noticed when they endorsed John McCain in the 2008 Republican primary and told Democrats to write McCain in.

Good luck Lauren! (0.00 / 0)
I'm excited for you and think you're making a great choice, but do know that your work will be missed. It's a hard job and I wish we had more people like you willing to do it.

It's time we steer by the stars, and not the lights of every passing ship

"Gatekeeper veneer" (0.00 / 0)
I think I know what you mean, and I think I agree that Lauren's columns did not exhibit it.

It worth more exploration, though. What are some examples of this veneer? Where should we look for it? What should a good-intentioned reporter /columnist look for in self-editing?

Of course bloggers are genetically immune from such flaws. I'm just asking for a friend.
