Judd Gregg scares little old ladies

by: Zandra Rice Hawkins

Thu Aug 20, 2009 at 17:39:56 PM EDT

(It's good to hear from someone who attended this meeting. Also interesting to note no anti-health reform "protesters". Hmmmm... - promoted by Jennifer Daler)

Salem, this morning -
Little old lady: Would my health care costs go down or would I maybe lose my coverage [under current health reform proposals]?

Judd Gregg: You're [health care is] at risk.

This, it should be noted, is not word-for-word. It is, however, the gist of an exchange that U.S. Senator Judd Gregg had at his health care forum this morning. The type of forum where legislators should talk openly and honestly about health insurance reform, but at which our Senator dearest decided to scare little old ladies that they might lose their health care under the Obama Administration.

Shameful.

Senator Gregg also used his last-minute, last-ditch forum to tout statistics from the Lewin Group, which he went to great lengths to describe as non-partisan and non-biased. Which it could be - if it wasn't owned by one of the largest insurance companies in the country, namely the UnitedHealth Group.

I cannot tell you how fired up it gets me to listen to blatant lies and misinformation coming from the office of a U.S. Senator. In reality, though, it gets me fired up - and ready to go. Hope, anger. Two very strong emotions which, harnessed in the right manner, can produce great changes. Harnessed in the wrong manner ...

Those teabaggers? The ones who have never gone to any of the local health care community meetings but who are so darn concerned about health care that they are harassing Congressional members intent on making sure the health care system really works for hard-working Americans?

Nowhere to be seen ...

Follow-up (0.00 / 0)
Perhaps the coalitions that you represent would have the time to follow-up with this seniors home and drop off some material for them to read about the true nature of the health care reform we all demand.

Thanks for being there to speak for us today.  Keep up the great work.

Change is risk... (0.00 / 0)
...until we know what this change is going to be there is risk for people.  The real point here is that Gregg is out meeting the public, while Shaheen, Shea-Porter and Hodes are too busy or hiding.  Shaheen had her call in telecon, and Shea-Porter did a NH AARP Telecon but they don't count as far as getting out to the people the old fashioned way.

I recieved a call Tuesday Night a little after 7:00 to participate in the NH AARP questions I hit *3 to ask a question but never got on.  Considering it was an invitation NH AARP telecon I was surprised that Healthcare reform only had tepid support from about half the callers, skepticism from 1/4 and rejection by 1/4.  NH AARP should have been one of her easiest venues.

Change is a constant. Most adults realize that (0.00 / 0)
the future is not guaranteed.  However, that's exactly why we organize government--to be prepared for the vagaries of man and nature we'd rather not experience.

Personally, I'd prefer to rely on people who aren't in it for the money.  I will grant that insurance is a great vehicle for collecting money for investment purposes.  Problem is that the track record of what's been invested in is not good.

Consider, for example, Hartford, Connecticut, the insurance capital of the United States.  Did their grandiosity prevent the city of Hartford from falling into gross disrepair?  No, it did not.  Why?  Because, presumably, the insurance companies considered investing in new cities or over-seas more attractive.  Every CEO appreciates a paid for junket to some other clime.  But, that does not endear the insurance industry to old ladies such as me.
