500+ Join "Grassroots for Kuster"

by: Colin Van Ostern

Fri Oct 23, 2009 at 11:50:54 AM EDT

Today the Kuster campaign released a list of more than 500 grassroots supporters in New Hampshire's second district.  (Press release and list of names after the jump).

I just wanted to add this personal note: I've been working to elect Democrats for most of the last decade here in New Hampshire, from former Governors to relative unknown candidates.  And I think that this broad support more than a year before the election - for someone who hasn't run for office before -- is remarkable.  This is a huge district, with 158 populated towns, and at this early stage Annie already has the support of hard-working, grassroots activists in seventy-nine of them.

Why?

Because she is working hard, and hustling.

Because she has deep ties all across the state from a lifetime of being engaged in our communities.

Because in her own life, and in who she is, she really represents the people of this district and stands up for what Democrats believe.

Because she cares about running a campaign based on people-power and personal relationships, and she knows that this sort of effort can win even against better-funded opponents.

I'm proud to work on this kind of campaign.

CONCORD, NH -  In a display of widespread grassroots support more than a year before the 2010 election, more than five hundred residents of New Hampshire's Second Congressional District today declared their support for Ann McLane Kuster's campaign as official members of "Grassroots for Kuster."  The supporters represent seventy-nine different towns around the district and include elected officials, community leaders, activists and volunteers.

"Our campaign is about sending someone to Washington who really represents the working families of this district, and that's why we are running a grassroots campaign built town-by-town and living-room-by-living-room," said Kuster, an attorney and public policy advocate.  "I am proud of having such widespread support at this early point in the race, and I am confident that with their help, we can move our state and our country forward in next year's election."

Since declaring her intention to run for Congress this June, McLane Kuster has traveled throughout the district, speaking with activists and voters at dozens of events from Brookline to Milan while building her grassroots support throughout the district along the way.

"Traveling around the district this summer and fall, I have heard over and over again from voters that we need to move our country forward with an economy that works for all of us and not just a select few.   I believe we must make an investment in clean energy jobs and the protection of our environment, we must reform our health insurance system so that everyone has access to affordable care, we must develop a clear strategy and exit plan for our troops in Afghanistan, and we must protect all our rights including a woman's right to choose.  The way to do all that is with a representative in Washington who is a partner, not an adversary , for President Obama.  That is what I stand for, and how I will work to move our country forward," said Kuster.

Born and raised in Concord, Ann McLane Kuster has a long history as a community activist, author, public policy advocate, and attorney with deep roots in the Granite State.  She worked with New Hampshire colleges to create the UNIQUE 529 College Savings Program to help families save for their children to attend college, and worked with a coalition of health care providers to create the Medication Bridge Program that distributes free medication to New Hampshire families and seniors who cannot afford the high cost of prescription drugs.  She has served as a board member or advisor to the NH Charitable Foundation, the Trust for Public Lands, Child and Family Services of New Hampshire, the United Way, and many other community groups.

Ann McLane Kuster announced her intention to represent New Hampshire's 2nd Congressional District earlier this year, and will be making a more formal campaign announcement in the coming months

Consistency (4.00 / 1)
Ever the meme watchdog, I think Annie's candidacy offers NH Progressives solid bracing from attacks about "insiders" and "Beltway gangs."

We know that the NHGOP will try to turn a solid point back around. They never concern themselves with the appearence of hypocrisy.

So when the NHDP, correctly calls foul:

Concord - A close examination of Senate hopeful Kelly Ayotte's FEC report confirms, today, that she is the candidate of Washington Republican insiders, not the people of New Hampshire.
-snip

The breadth and depth of the contributions made by Republicans reinforces an argument that Kelly Ayotte is the handpicked candidate of Washington.

You can expect the confused NHGOP to try to twist it back.

Annie's roots and life's efforts in NH, coupled with deep support amongst Granite Staters; diffuses any such silly arguements blurted forth from the media sharpies surrounding Bass or Horn.

PS. Talk about work ethic! From Annie's Facebook page:

Ann McLane Kuster looking forward to a busy fall: Concord 10/20, Jaffrey 10/20, Salem 10/23, Whitefield 10/24, Grantham, 10/25, Hopkinton 11/4, Lebanon 11/6, Holderness, 11/8, Bedford 11/9, Hanover 11/11, Harrisville 11/12, Elkins 11/16, Concord 11/20, New Castle 12/4, Lancaster, Randolph, and Bethlehem 12/6 . . . and more! Those brave pioneers, bravely heading North. They wanted something familiar, I guess.

Considering, I grew up in a town named after Reading, England.

In Maine, it's just York.

"What did you do in Maine?"

"I sacked York. Great fun."

Annie knows her State and its families and children and seniors (0.00 / 0)
Unlike Annie who is New Hampshire born, I know the difference between the difference between Massachusetts Concord (State Prison), Salem (Witch Trials), Hopkinton (Boston Marathon), and so forth ... Annie knows her State and its people, and she has her feet on the ground advocating for New Hampshire families and children and seniors for decades - and I'm more than comfortable with that.

"from 543 donors (404 in New Hampshire). " (4.00 / 1)
The 2nd Congressional District campaign is just getting started. The only candidate who appears to have a serious fundraising effort under way is Ann McLane Kuster, who brought in $180,300 this quarter from 543 donors (404 in New Hampshire). That gives her $260,000 left to spend, and she has already spent $68,000. Supporters include some well-known Democrats - Rep. Susan Almy, chairwoman of the House Ways and Means committee; Sen. Harold Janeway and Stonyfield Farms CEO Gary Hirshberg.

Follow the people, not just the money ... (0.00 / 0)
BUT its not just about money - its people.  Annie likes people, and they like her.  Some say "follow the money" but, in Annie's case, it's the people, and their money, is following her ...
