Open Thread: Focused on Military Families

by: Dean Barker

Thu Nov 19, 2009 at 06:10:55 AM EST

Our Congresswoman - ever focused on the military and their families.
Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter attended a "USO Care Package for Women" Stuffing Party with Dr. Jill Biden.  Volunteers gathered to assemble 2,000 care packages with items such as skin, nail and hair products; hygiene products, snack items and refreshments.  These care packages will be delivered to female troops deploying to Afghanistan, Iraq, and other overseas locations.

This is an Open Thread.

The hacktacular John DiStaso (4.00 / 1)
His "news" stories are still online. Yesterday:

Mahoney's decision leaves former Attorney General Kelly Ayotte, Manchester attorney Ovide Lamontagne and businessmen William Binnie of Rye and James Bender of Hollis as the announced candidates in the race to succeed Sen. Judd Gregg, who will not seek reelection next year.

The lone Democratic candidate is U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes.

Ayotte, Lamontagne, and Kimball are the "announced candidates." Hodes needs an adjective: he is a "Democratic candidate."

It is simply bizarre writing and editing. The qualifier "Republican" belongs in the first paragraph. You have to really work at not including it.

The Republican brand seems to have lost its luster. (4.00 / 2)
I'm hoping we can do the same with "conservative."  That term has long been misused, considering that to conserve means to prevent things going to waste.  The heartland has been transformed into a fearful wasteland.

Maybe that's it - (0.00 / 0)
It bugged me because of the "you have your candidates who are actually in the race, then you have your Democrats" thing.

But maybe it's really about, "You have your Democratic candidate, and then you have your candidates from the Dare Not Speak Its Name party."

Do you remember (4.00 / 1)
your President Nixon?

Getting back to the post at hand... (4.00 / 2)
... this act by Carol and others like it is at the heart of why I think she is such a remarkable person- she has real principles and she acts on them. Carol said 3+ years ago she would care about the military, and quietly and in her own way she has worked on their behalf. Not to get a mention in the newspapers, or to burnish her image at election time, but because she is connected and understands military families and cares about them.

I think the toll will go up soon.

Once again, the trap -- ignore or discuss. But it's a really sad comment on our political culture that She Who Shall Not Be Named by Me is not getting James Frey-style pariah treatment this week.

Carol is the best friend a veteran in NH (4.00 / 2)
and anywhere else could have.  Ditto for military families.  I just dare the Republicans to attack her on that issue!

This woman has real family values, not just for her own family, but for all of ours as well, veterans, military, and famously, the rest of us.

We believe in prosperity & opportunity, strong communities, healthy families, great schools, investing in our future and leading the world by example. We are Democrats; we are the change you're looking for.
