Gregg: A Vote for Reform is a Vote to End Thanksgiving

by: Zandra Rice Hawkins

Sun Nov 22, 2009 at 12:40:20 PM EST

(It took me a while to figure it out, but I think I finally get it: this final session for Gregg is one long audition for a future FOX News permanent gig. - promoted by Dean Barker)

Or something like that.

In one of the more ridiculous holiday-themed statements I've seen, Sen. Judd Gregg equivocated voting to open debate on how to fix the nation's health care crisis with putting pilgrims "on a leaky ship back to Europe."

"As we near the celebration of the Pilgrims who crossed the Atlantic for a new life in the Americas, tonight, the Senate Democrats have ironically put our country on a backward course towards a European-style, government-run health care system.  Regardless of opinion polls, the will of their constituents, or just plain common sense, my Democratic colleagues are fully committed to the government controlling your health care and charging your children and your grandchildren trillions for it.  This is not the reform Americans want, and it puts our country's future prosperity on a leaky ship back to Europe.

I didn't realize that the pilgrims were fleeing comprehensive health care coverage when they boarded the Mayflower. For some strange historical reason, I thought they were seeking more religious freedom and choice ... I could, however, see a comparison between resisting a monopoly on religion and resisting a monopoly of a private insurance industry that routinely and discriminately dictates who will get coverage and at what cost, to the detriment of families everywhere.

Looking forward to calling Greg's Office in the week ahead (4.00 / 1)
We will not be able to call a Republican NH Senator for much longer, may as well do it while we can!

Sen. Judd Gregg at 202-370-7700

Give his office a call and let them know you support Health Care reform.

but what planet are these people on?  What alternate universe with a completely different history do they inhabit?  Gregg is old enough to have learned history in school.  But here he is making things up out of whole cloth.

And most of our media just continues to let them get away with it.  We are journalism, my friends, here.  Because there sure ain't any elsewhere.

We believe in prosperity & opportunity, strong communities, healthy families, great schools, investing in our future and leading the world by example. We are Democrats; we are the change you're looking for.

More than just the Mayflower (4.00 / 2)
However fractured the history may be (with negative parts glossed over), there is a story and a reason we celebrate.  It's not because we like our private health insurance.

It's because four hundred years ago, natives and pilgrims came together to help one another survive the harsh winter ahead.  We celebrate the willingness of people to help each other for the greater good, instituted as a national holiday by a President trying to hold the nation together in its darkest hour.

Thanksgiving is a great American celebration of the goodness of mankind.  National holidays--especially this one--are not for political hyperbole.

50% mortality (0.00 / 0)
Since roughly half of the Mayflower's pilgrims were dead within the first year from starvation and disease, Miles Standish must clearly have been running colony-wide Death Panels!

here's the Randian Thanksgiving Story (4.00 / 1)
Did you know that the first [Plymouth Colony Pilgrim's] Thanksgiving was a celebration of the triumph of private property and individual initiative?

I can't wait to read A Very Randian Christmas Carol... (4.00 / 2)
The all-crushing wisdom and strength of Ebenezer not only bore him headlong upward through the storms and barricades of the modern jungle of finance, but, while scarcely conscious of their presence, like a charging lion heedless of the mites in his mane, sustained by the force of his genius, through greater degrees or lesser, a thousand lesser beings, including one Bob Cratchit, an uncreative lickspittle with a worthless parasite of a son...

But doesn't the populist pundit role require some (4.00 / 1)
sort of empathy and connection with the public?

Like Beck - no, wait a minute. Like Limb... O'Reil... Coul... Dobb...

You're right. He's perfect.

But GREGG is not wooing us. (0.00 / 0)
