My thoughts on President Obama's Afghanistan speech

We are at war with Al Qaeda because they attacked us - and we need to make sure they cannot do it again. I am committed to finding the best ways to keep Americans safe.

I am sure this was a very difficult decision for the President. Unfortunately, the problems in Afghanistan exist in large part because the Bush Administration took its eye off the ball and got us bogged down in an unnecessary war in Iraq.

While I am pleased that the President has decided to set a timetable for drawing down our troops in Afghanistan, I do not agree with the decision to first send 30,000 additional troops. It is not clear that sending more combat troops is the best way to meet the real threat, as Al Qaeda disperses to Pakistan and other countries. This is particularly important as our military has been strained by six years of fighting in Iraq and eight years of fighting in Afghanistan.

I believe we need better cooperation and accountability from the Afghani government and we must demand a commitment from them to root out corruption. Instead of more troops, we should be sending more trainers to help the Afghan military provide better security for its citizens. Rather than a broad counterinsurgency, we need a narrowly focused mission, with clear, measurable goals for success. Our involvement can't be a blank check, and I appreciate the President's attempts to focus our mission.

While I would have made a different choice, I will of course support our troops in their mission. I very much hope that this new strategy will succeed so that we can begin bringing our soldiers home, give them the full support and veterans' assistance they deserve, and focus on the great economic challenges we face here at home.

PS - A month ago, I shared my thoughts on this issue as well.

I only have (4.00 / 2)
a quibble with this

We are at war with Al Qaeda because they attacked us -

Al Qaeda is not a country and doesn't even have a discernible constituency. Therefore, we cannot be at war with it in the same way as if another sovereign nation had attacked us.

Al Qaeda is a terrorist organization, which, to me, is a criminal entity. I have no idea what their goals are, who they are or whom they even purport to represent. We should not be giving them legitimacy by bringing them to a political status they do not deserve.

Isn't Al Qaeda In Other Countries As Well? (0.00 / 0)
...I'm sure I read stories about that.  Wouldn't it be so neat if they were all just in Afghanistan?  But of course, they're not.  In fact, there might just be 100 or so there, according to intelligence sources.

How many of the 19 terrorists who flew planes into the World Trade Center and The Pentagon were from Afghanistan?

And, is Afghanistan the only place terrorists are being trained?

There's way too much political spin on justifying our war actions in Afghanistan.  Change We Can Believe In?

Half right (4.00 / 1)
Yep. AQ is in other places, not just Afghanistan.

Whack-a-mole!

Helicopter-borne Special Forces troops attacked and killed a top al-Qaeda-linked suspect in a raid in southern Somalia early Monday, U.S. officials said.

Officials said Saleh Ali Nabhan, 30, a Kenyan sought in the 2002 bombing of an Israeli-owned resort in Kenya and an unsuccessful attempt that year to shoot down an Israeli airliner, was among four men killed in the attack. U.S. troops fired from the air at a vehicle in which the men were traveling.

At least four helicopters participated in the raid, launched from a nearby U.S. naval vessel, a senior military official said. At least one of them landed, and troops retrieved the bodies. "You want to go in there, do this fast, and get out before you're detected," the official said.

Yes! Change I know I believe in!

One hopes that "thoughts" is a euphemism here and the (0.00 / 0)
candidate has another think on this topic.  It's a bit presumptuous to be demanding accountability from another nation when we can't even get our own military to account for what's been spent on the disaster in the Middle East.
