Manchester Express ceases publication

by: The Money Magician

Tue Jan 05, 2010 at 19:28:36 PM EST

The Manchester Express has finally folded.  As poor as its circulation was, it was the only print-media alternative in Manchester to the Union Leader, often breaking stories that the Union Leader would have to reluctantly follow up on later - e.g., Guinta's flight from the Fish and Game.

It will be missed.

Good riddance to bad rubbish (4.00 / 1)
You might miss the Express, but many of us won't.

The paper had become a shrieking, sensationalistic, right-wing rag. When they started out, they had some good reporters, like Dan Magazu and Jen Nickulas, but Jody Reese decided to take the low road. He brought on Joe Kelly Levasseur to write a political column, turned news reporting over to Free Stater Andrew Manuse (who has said that his blog posts are inspired by God), and gave weekly op/ed space to Republican activists Rich Girard, Steve Vaillancourt, and Joe Briggs.

Manuse is a particularly repulsive little man. He thought that my being treated for depression deserved to be on the pages of his newspaper; it was evident that he was doing this to benefit his friend Levasseur's political ambitions.

As far as I am concerned, the Express was far worse than the modern UL. You don't see Scott Brooks or Tom Fahey actively participating in Ron Paul online groups while they are employed as political reporters.

I agree with Peter (4.00 / 1)
As a new resident in Manchester, I did not see anything more than a vicious right wing leaning rag. I did not learn anything new that I hadn't read elsewhere.

Good riddance!

Has the Concord Monitor ever thought about covering Manchester? That would be a real alternative!

The Boston Phoenix is sniffing around (0.00 / 0)
They already have Providence and Worcester editions, so Manchester would be an obvious next step. Hopefully, something will come of this.

Portland (0.00 / 0)
The Phoenix is also in Portland, ME - which maintains two free daily newspapers AND a couple free weeklies (including the Phoenix).  How is it that a city smaller than Manchester can maintain all of this news and culture?

I'm disappointed in the demise of the Express for the mere fact of loosing another alternative news source to the Union Misleader.  I hope whatever it is the Hippopress comes up with will be a nice substitution.

"alternative"? In what sense? (4.00 / 1)
How is a paper edited by a Free Stater and whose columnists include Levasseur, Briggs, and Girard an alternative? If anything, it catered to the cranky right even more than the UL did.

Right by accident, not by design (0.00 / 0)
I agree that the Manuse editorship was the nadir of the Express's history.

Especially toward the end, the Express would print pretty much anything anyone offered that was legible and not libelous.  The fact that it ended up being so much Girardage and Vaillany is more a measure of their willingness to spew for free than of any editorial policy.

Contrast that with the Union (mis)Leader, where they either suffer from a lot of smoke re-inhalation, or deliberately spin and suppress to support the editorial line - I can't tell which a lot of the time.

Ain't no doubt we could do better than either.
