Please Help Haiti

by: Dean Barker

Fri Jan 15, 2010 at 19:29:38 PM EST

I know we're a small little niche blog on Granite State politics, but it would nonetheless be remiss of us not to put up a front-page post to highlight a link to help Haiti.
American Red Cross
or simply text "HAITI" to 90999 for a 10 dollar donation that goes to your phone bill.
There are so many levels of awful in this catastrophe - the dead, the dying, getting food and water to the survivors, the maintenance of civil society - it's hard not be heartbroken over this one.

And relatedly: would someone with power and influence in the GOP do something to cut off this monster's microphone?

Thank You, Dean (0.00 / 0)
This is a catastrophe of Biblical proportions.  We need to rebuild this country.

As for Rush. . . He's jealous.  Rush just wants all the prescription drugs on those humanitarian aid flights for his own personal use.

You're right. He's an attention hog-- (0.00 / 0)
jealous of anyone and anything that gets public notice.
Many people are fascinated by the spectacle of humans self-destructing.  That doesn't mean they're going to jump into the cauldron.

it's a sad commentary (4.00 / 1)
It's a sad commentary that Limbaugh is taken at all seriously, especially after his latest outburst.

His latest outburst? (4.00 / 2)
He's had a plethora of absolutely absurd, hateful, and racist comments in his 20 or so years on the airwaves that make it sad he's taken seriously - let alone listened to by millions of fear-mongering tea baggers.  His comments about not donating to Haiti and saying Obama only cares about helping "light-skinned and dark-skinned" people in Haiti is just another piece of evidence proving this man deserves to be fired.

Roger Ebert lets him have it. (4.00 / 1)

I still think Roger Ebert is one of America's most underrated political commentator. When he does critique politics, Ebert is often spot on. Here's what he had to say about Rush Limbaugh's comments.

A Letter to Rush Limbaugh.

CNN Newsteam as Medics (0.00 / 0)
CNN medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta has been treating critically ill patients in a make-shift hospital after the UN ordered doctors and nurses to evacuate.

With a dearth of medical facilities in Haiti's capital, ambulances had no where else to take patients, some who had suffered severe trauma -- amputations and head injuries -- under the rubble. Others had suffered a great deal of blood loss, but there were no blood supplies left at the clinic.

Gupta feared that some would not survive the night.

At 3:45 a.m., he posted a message on Twitter: "pulling all nighter at haiti field hosp. lots of work, but all patients stable. turned my crew into a crack med team tonight."

Thread on it here.

If you have a phone that doesn't text, a "pay as yo go" phone, or don't have a cell phone at all, you can donate on iTunes!

Doctors without Borders (4.00 / 1)
http://doctorswithoutborders.org/ is an excellent group to donate to. They provide medical care - and they also bear public witness to atrocities and injustice.

AmeriCares (0.00 / 0)
Thanks, Susan, for drawing attention to one of the truly extraordinary nonprofits of our times.  I will definitely make a contribution.

I also donated to AmeriCares (http://www.americares.org/), an organization known for its low overhead and extremely high % of donations that go directly to humanitarian care.

An organization also worth supporting (0.00 / 0)

Please consider donating to Grassroots International's earthquake relief fund for Haiti. Grassroots International, of Boston, MA, works with four main groups in Haiti including the Haitian Platform to Advocate Alternative Development (PAPDA) and the Platform of Haitian Human Rights Organizations (POHDH). Check it out.
