Rep. John Murtha Has Died

by: Jennifer Daler

Mon Feb 08, 2010 at 15:27:18 PM EST

TPM is reporting that US Representative John Murtha (D-PA) has died. He was in intensive care because of complications from gall bladder surgery.

A long time Congressman, (he was elected in 1974), Murtha was Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.

He became an outspoken opponent of the Iraq war, calling for withdrawal back in 2005.

HODES STATEMENT ON CONGRESSMAN JOHN MURTHA (4.00 / 1)
Concord NH - Paul Hodes released the following statement on the passing of Congressman John Murtha:

"Jack Murtha served his nation in Vietnam and in Congress. America thanks him for his service. My thoughts are with his family and close friends as they mourn this sad news."

Whatever else there is to say... (4.00 / 6)
about John Murtha, he will always be linked in my mind to 2005 when I, still a fledgling young Democrat in the infancy of my self-realized liberalism, heard of his opposition to the Iraq war.  For some reason this still stands out in my mind as the watershed moment when popular opinion turned against the war.  It may not be accurate, but the two are tied in my mind, and I remember it being one of the first times I felt hopeful about the prospect of Democratic and progressive victories in the aftermath of the dismal 2004 election.

John P. Murtha R.I.P. (4.00 / 4)
Jack Murtha was my congressman for many years when I lived in western Pennsylvania. He was also my friend. Though I sometimes disagreed with him on issues, I could never fault his dedication to the citizens of the 12th district. They were always his first concern.

As a member of the US Marines, he fought bravely for his country in Vietnam. When he stood up and spoke out against the war in Iraq, I was so proud of his courage in opposing a disasterous foriegn policy.

Jack never forgot the fact that we helped him in his first election in 1974. Even after we moved to New Hampshire he told us he would continue to represent us until we got a Democratic representative of our own.

My thoughts are with the Murtha family today. He will be sorely missed.
