It May Be Cloudy, But The Earth Hasn't Moved

This commentary from Stirling Newberry is as accurate today as it was in 2006:
When Charlie Bass belches forth hate and venom in private to get his troglodyte base to turn out - confirming to them he is a down the line Republican - and then has to run ads about how "no party decides how I'll vote" - it is clear that the fundamental bald face lie that the Republican Party has told to its rock ribbed moderate voters has erupted to the surface.
The "venom" in question no doubt referring to this:
The only difference is, now that the wind isn't blowing against him so much, the BassMaster feels a little freer to court the base openly.

Adding: Perhaps I should be clearer here.  My point is that Charlie Bass is not a Tea Party Standard Bearer any more than he is a Moderate Yankee Republican.

Charlie Bass is a party functionary who did whatever Presidents Gingrich and W. Bush directed him to do.  It never put him any further than backbencher status in the House, but he plugged away at the agenda anyway.

The key to him getting away with this for 12 years was to play The Moderate at home. After a while the cognitive dissonance between the wreckage of the Bush years and the demographics of the 2nd district made that role playing untenable.

Now the spirit of the times calls for Republicans to get their talking points from Rush Limbaugh and Co. The problem for Mr. Bass is that he can't do that very effectively without also bringing up his baggage from the Bush years.

Or, to put it in another way, in an open seat race, he is the de facto DC establishment incumbent.

This needs to be hammered home. (4.00 / 1)
According to Veronique de Rugy of the Mercatus Center. (De Rugy, a former research analyst at the Cato Institute and former fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, continues: "In his last term in office, President Bush increased discretionary outlays by an estimated 48.6 percent. During his eight years in office, President Bush spent almost twice as much as his predecessor, President Clinton. Adjusted for inflation, in eight years, President Clinton increased the federal budget by 11 percent. In eight years, President Bush increased it by a whopping 104 percent."

The neocons live in a surreal world because they just don't understand that is their leaders who brought this country to its knees....people like Charlie Bass aren't going to make the world better.

These days, it would refer to this: (4.00 / 1)
From the Concord Monitor:
"We give the Christmas Day bomber his Miranda rights, allow al-Qaida leaders to be tried in the city of New York, and we'll repatriate Guantanamo prisoners to Illinois," Bass said. "It's not a strong message that we need to win the war on terrorism by stopping terrorists."

How far the Bass brand has fallen.  From proud and principled liberal Republicans to this wheedling Palin-parroting moral jellyfish.

He's Always Been (0.00 / 0)
political pond scum, a guy who will do anything to get elected.  Making fun of them New Yawk Jews to an audience of well-fed Vermont conservatives is par for his shriveled little course.
