Weekend Open Thread: Playing with Fire

by: Dean Barker

Leader Reid:
"If a decision is made to use reconciliation to advance health care, Senator Reid will work with the White House, House and members of his caucus in an effort to craft a public option that can overcome procedural obstacles and secure enough votes," the statement reads.
I sure hope they know what they are doing.  I don't think Democrats can handle another Lucy and the Football moment without a complete collapse of the base closely following.

This is a Weekend Open Thread.

I am really keeping my fingers crossed (4.00 / 3)
on this one. Maybe I am gullible, but I am reasonably confident that the responsible 3/4 of our delegation gets it, and I am hoping that the vast majority of those signing on to this initiative are not doing so for cynical reasons.

I agree with Dean that there is a fire hazard here. Fire can either cook your dinner or burn down your house; skillful hands are needed for this job.

One thing is crystal clear to me: they had better do all of this in the daylight. This is one sausage that requires a totally transparent grinder, and the ingredients had better be devoid of pork and completely kosher.

Anything else will be a total disaster.

Dirty deals with Nelson and Lieberman (4.00 / 4)
were the straws that broke the camel's back. If they can't do a deal now then we should cancel all of Congress' health care.

Get it done. (4.00 / 1)
Poll:
49 percent said they prefer Obama's approach on job creation, compared to 26 percent who prefer Republicans in Congress. 46 percent said they favor Obama's approach on the economy, as well, while 30 percent backed the GOP.
44 percent favor Obama's approach on tax policy to 34 percent for Republicans. 42 percent also trust Obama to handle the debt and federal deficit, compared to 33 percent who trust Republicans.
Obama also enjoys a wide margin over Republicans when it comes to his climate change legislation. 38 percent say they'd prefer to see Obama's approach prevail, over 26 percent who like Republicans' plans.

The popularity of an individual bill during the sausage-making process isn't as important as the fact that people want to see things getting done.  That's how we win this year.  Do what we said we'd do.

When elections are about the issues, Democrats win.
