"To Hell With the Kids"

( - promoted by Dean Barker)

My town held its school district meeting today.  We have not gone to SB2, so we meet and vote as a group.  The quote of the day has to be one voter who stood up during the discussion of the operating budget and announced, "Taxes are going up, I like my house and want to stay in it and to hell with the kids."
bloomingpol :: "To Hell With the Kids"
The budget was article 5.  We had passed by substantial margins a new one year paraprofessional contract and a new teachers contract, again one year, and the teachers had been without a contract for a year.  Both groups did agree to some changes to health insurance which will save the town some money.

After discussion the budget passed, again by a substantial margin.  There were about 200 people at the meeting, which is more than we have gotten in past years.

And the gentleman (term used advisedly) whose quote leads this diary?  His statement was met with a wave of shocked voices, which the moderator stopped with a smack of the gavel and a reminder that we were to be civil.  Some even suggested later that perhaps he was a mole, but I don't think so.  He is just angry and not inclined much to sharing. The majority do want to support our schools and our kids.  And I use the "our" on purpose, because there were people there who no longer have kids in the school who still voted to support education.  As one parent reminded us, these kids will be taking care of us one day.

It's straight from the far right template (0.00 / 0)
Which basically says, "my money is more important than anything."  Forget education, forget taking care of sick people, forget helping out anyone in need - I need money so that I can be happy.  At least he's saying it out in the open, the rest of the Palin wing will have you believe that they really do care about helping others while deep down they could care less.  I wish the rest of the right wing were this honest so that the country would fully understand how insidious these people are.

PTED (0.00 / 0)
Post Traumatic Embitterment Disorder is a new phenomena that relates to the anxiety of economic uncertainty.  The global economy is eroding the standard of living in the US as employers export jobs and import profits.  When you combine employment volatility with the regressive tax system in NH, which we refer to as the NH advantage, the result is people fighting over the left-over crumbs.

People are angry, scared, and lashing out...Some only say foolish words at School District/Town Meeting, others do far more dangerous things.  Your neighbor has a legitimate point that should not be evaluated by how he expresses himself.  His fear for survival and shelter may be far greater than his ability to provide community support.  It is important to understand that and work for economic justice that includes a more progressive tax system.

As long as we have candidates taking the pledge and maintaining the status quo, we'll continue to struggle to meet our local education responsibilities.

"Physical concepts are free creations of the human mind, and are not, however it may seem, uniquely determined by the external world." A. Einstein

It's not the global economy that's at fault. (0.00 / 0)
The fault lies with the people who want to control the globe by depriving people of what they need to survive unless and until they do what they are told.
Some people are impelled to manipulate natural materials.  They're the descendants of homo habilis.  Others are impelled to manipulate other people, perhaps because they have no talent to do anything and be creative with their hands.  Whatever the reason, these control freaks have discovered that deprivation is cheaper than bribes in getting people to work for them.  They're freeloaders.  Which would be OK, if they weren't into deprivation.
Money, the substance which lubricates our exchange of goods and services, provides a convenient screen behind which the deprivators can wreck their havoc without leaving any fingerprints.

This gentlemen (0.00 / 0)
was expressing sentiments of this sort long before the recession.  He is not poor or downtrodden. He lives in a very nice house on one of our lakes.   There were people there for whom the property tax is a burden, but the margins of the votes for the school were pretty substantial, these were not close votes.  Young and old expressed a need to take care of the kids.

Not that I don't agree we need to work for economic justice.  I would start by asking those among us who are richest to at least pay their fair share, since they did not get where they are because of their own bootstraps, but because they live in a country that gave them a safe start and an education, among other things.

We believe in prosperity & opportunity, strong communities, healthy families, great schools, investing in our future and leading the world by example. We are Democrats; we are the change you're looking for.
