The Passing Of Granny D.

by: Rep. Jim Splaine

Tue Mar 09, 2010 at 21:32:41 PM EST

( - promoted by elwood)

We have been informed that Granny D. has passed away this afternoon.  She turned 100 on January 24th, and we had a large party at the State House for her on January 28th, which she so much enjoyed.

With the help of many who read and blog on www.BlueHampshire.com, the House and Senate approved, and Governor John Lynch signed legislation last year creating a Citizen-Funded Campaign Task Force, which was a continuing cause of Granny D.  We have held about a dozen meetings, and Granny D. has attended most of them, including this past January.

Doris "Granny D." Haddock was Democratic U.S. Senate Nominee in 2004, running against incumbent Judd Gregg.  She gave him a run for his money, and did a great job at the televised debate.  Her story, "Run Granny Run," was an HBO documentary which can be seen free on Comcast and Hulu, and the DVD can be purchased on Amazon.com.  It's a fantastic story about New Hampshire politics.

She had been in Arizona for the past few weeks, planning to return soon to continue her work.  Her cause will continue.  She taught us all determination, dedication, vision.  What a wonderful person.  And she'll continue to be with us.

Confirmation has just come in ... (0.00 / 0)
.... from WMUR - RIP, Granny.

"We should pay attention to that man behind the curtain."

leave it to the NH media (4.00 / 2)
the best person WMUR could come up with for a comment was Gatsas?

Susan, this is the same TV station that booted Al Jazeera from their studios. n/t (0.00 / 0)

They tried (4.00 / 1)
WMUR did try for someone else; according to my voice mail, they called my house around 10:40 last night.

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

They couldn't find a single NH Democratic Party leader to interview? (0.00 / 0)

That's still pathetic. It's not like they're in short supply in the state.

what a remarkable life (4.00 / 7)
Granny D led. She was a role model for every citizen activist.

a long life over too soon (4.00 / 3)
She kept working right up to the end: she lived a long time but she had many plans for the futurem because her work was far from over.  She was planning to host a conference in Portsmouth the weekend after next.

And how apropos was it ...... (4.00 / 3)
.... that she died on the 2nd Tuesday in March - Town Meeting Day in much of the Granite State (and in Lebanon, we at least had school budget votes and the like today).

From Ann McLane Kuster:
Granny D's life is an inspiration and her dedication to the cause of true democracy is a model for all of us. Big money in politics has profoundly damaged our nation, and if this brave woman could walk across the country to draw attention to campaign finance reform at age 90, the rest of us can certainly re-commit ours...elves to this cause in her memory. Rest in Peace, Granny D, but we will not rest in this effort.

So sad to hear. (4.00 / 7)
My sympathies to her family and friends.

And to New Hampshire, who has lost its finest citizen.

First the Old Man of the Mountains (4.00 / 5)
and now Doris. Both symbols of New Hampshire's bedrock.

...the Doo Dah Man once told me you've got to play your hand. Sometimes the cards ain't worth a dime if you don't lay 'em down.

Rest in Peace, Granny D (4.00 / 7)
I would have loved to have you (rather than the Iceman) as a US Senator during the past five years.  You would have turned DC on its head -- and would have had a hell of a lot of fun in the process.

RIP Granny D (4.00 / 6)
We'll miss you, but you live on in our hearts and inspiration.

In memory of Doris (4.00 / 2)
we must all redouble our efforts to make certain that the Senate seat currently obstructed by the Abominable "No" Man is occupied by a responsible adult. The least we can do in her honor.

Doris 'Granny D' Haddock was eloquent, funny, powerful (4.00 / 3)
Doris 'Granny D' Haddock was eloquent, funny, powerful - and one of a kind. She was an indeterminable advocate for real reform, a gutsy voice for those who had lost theirs and a constant reminder to all of us of the very best in New Hampshire and in our political process. New Hampshire lost a hero tonight, and while Granny D will be truly missed, she will never be forgotten. The world is a better place for her having walked among us, with us and for us

She Stepped Up (4.00 / 6)
In 2004, the NHDP found itself without a legitimate U.S. senate candidate with about 40 hours before the filing period ended. Unfortunately, the party could not take advantage of the window permitting us to fill an open slot, as some fringe person had filed. No one would step up and run - and then Granny D called the party office and said she woould run. She ran a very credible and energetic campaign and was articulate about the issues. She did a good job, and I will always be grateful that this gracious woman had the courage to run against Judd Gregg, unlike the approximately 55 other people I called before she volunteered.

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

Let's not forget (4.00 / 1)
that Granny D's 34% was the highest any opponent of Judd Gregg received during his incumbency.  I have never been so proud to cast my vote for someone as I was for Granny D six years ago.  I wish most candidates could be so honest, candid and well-intentioned.

[ Parent ]
Yup (4.00 / 2)
Not only did she bail us out of a jam, she did better than the party registration percentage, which, in a day of straight party ticket voting, was important to the overall effort.

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

[ Parent ]
Among all of her accomplishments (4.00 / 2)
it was her stepping up and running in 2004 that I admired most. Her campaign was (although perhaps not to those who knew her) surprisingly effectively.
I thought it took a lot of both guts and grace to do what she did in 2004.

Bresler for Emperor

[ Parent ]
I heard Doris (4.00 / 2)
interviewed on NHPR, after she'd announced that she would run against Judd Gregg. The interviewer tried, delicately, to bring up the fact that Granny D was 94 at the time and it was a 6 year term. Doris just giggled, and said that she believed in term limits, so if elected, she promised to only serve the one term.

[ Parent ]
RIP (4.00 / 1)
I remember meeting her when I was like 12 and being like...what a cool lady.

What a fantastic woman (0.00 / 0)
I have been watching some of her speeches over the past couple days while I've been sick.

Does anyone have a copy of "Run Granny Run" that I could borrow - I want to learn more.
