"It's worth noting that today, the Fifteenth of March, is remembered as the 'Ides of March'- a day of reckoning and foreboding," Gov. Mark Sanford says in a written statement that criticizes the Democratic health care reform plan. "In the same way, today represents a time of foreboding for our nation given the historic nature of what is taking place in Washington."
Disgraced Governor Mark Sanford probably thinks he's being cute and literary here.
But there's nothing cute about it. He is implying that Barack Obama's health care reform agenda is akin to the kind of power grab overreach that led to the political assassination of Julius Caesar by some members of the Roman senate.
Under any circumstances, this is an irresponsible, unacceptable comparison. It is especially so in an environment where the country's first African-American president is regularly smeared as some socialist, Kenyan-born Muslim impostor by the Tea People crowd.
You can now add disgraced Governor Mark Sanford's name to the growing list of scoundrels gleefully pouring gasoline on the fire.
Adding: and if you think I'm being oversensitive here because of my dead language day job, ask yourself what John Wilkes Booth said when he shot Lincoln, and what it referenced.
