The GOP Circular Firing Squad

by: GreyMike

Fri Mar 26, 2010 at 10:39:37 AM EDT

Sure is interesting to watch various parts of the GOP machine flying off in all directions as it continues to try to "reinvent itself". Palin is stumping for McCain (an excellent idea!), Frum has been banished from the fold, Scott Brown has been marked as a traitor to the cause (watch out for them thar crosshairs, Scott), the hits just keep rolling in!

Reinvent? Maybe they should just repeal themselves and start over.

Don't forget their "newest" tactic, (4.00 / 1)
which, according to McCain, is no more cooperation in the Senate.

Oh yes. The tactics of 2-year-olds. (0.00 / 0)
Fold your arms, pout, and say "no".

Republicans believe government is bad - then they get into office and prove it.

Bennett of Utah (4.00 / 1)
Good article in NYTimes today about the re-election problems of Senator Bennett of Utah.
The take away line is:

His fate is being watched not only by grass-roots conservatives testing their ability to shape the party, but also by many elected Republicans in Washington who are wondering, If Bob Bennett is not conservative enough, who is?

His sister was defeated as a precinct delegate after announcing she would support her brother for re-election.

Barring a big McCain comeback, and a turnabout in numerous congressional races where the party is in trouble, the GOP  is on the brink of a soul-searching debate about what to do to reclaim power. Much of that debate will hinge on appraisals of what McCain could have done differently.

How's that hatey Palin thingy working out for ya?

Among this group there is an emerging debate - one with the potential to last for a long time about the role of vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

One school - including syndicated columnist Kathleen Parker and Peggy Noonan of the Wall Street Journal - called her a drag on the ticket and implicitly rebuked McCain's judgment in picking her. Another school believes she is the future of the party, a view backed by Fred Barnes of The Weekly Standard: "Whether they know it or not, Republicans have a huge stake in Palin. If, after the election, they let her slip into political obscurity, they'll be making a huge mistake."

In The Week, former Bush speechwriter David Frum wrote of McCain's travails in a way that seemed to take defeat for granted and warned the GOP faces a long road back. "That's not a failure of campaign tactics. It's not even a failure of strategy. It's a failure of the Republican Party and conservative movement to adapt to the times."

first a h/t to Fred Barnes for his prescience, and to the point about adapting to the times, 'well I say, go for it".

These guys just keep recycling bad strategy and tactics. (0.00 / 0)
Newt was proposing that the Republicans use their soon-to-be-won majorities in Congress (fat chance) to shut down government in order to not fund the Affordable Health Care Act...Gingrich also suggested this tactic in 2008 to move the drilling vote.

If there was a way to chortle over the internet, that would be me right now.  This worked so well for Newt in the 90s that he keeps trying to bring it back.

Go for it.

our guys reuse good tactic (4.00 / 1)
was thinking  yesterday how Obama 'sat down' with the Republican to discuss health care in a televised day long forum. good for us, not for them.

In the depths of Bill Cinton's post 1994 calamitous mid term loss over the failure of HCR, he 'sat down' and 'joined hands' with Speaker Gingrich in Claremont at a senior center. The big cudgel at that point was hitting Clinton over the head on Deficit Reduction. He and the Democrats had a ten-year deficit reduction bill in the works, the Republicans were having none of it. Gingrich was burning up the media calling for a more 'draconian' 4 year plan.

In Claremont at senior center Clinton started to make peace with the Speaker, and eventually own him.

Clinton sat down and said 'okay Newtie', I'm with you on the need to do it, do it right, and if its doable your way show me I'll walk that road with you.

The DC Dem establishment liberals, the Nations etc., excoriated Clinton for 'giving in'. The result was that he owned Gingrich from then on, and oh yeah Al Gore provided the 51st vote for a historic and successful Deficit Reduction Plan ....Newt's head just about exploded from ego by getting President Clinton's undivided attention...he won he won...but ummm no he lost big, Govt Shutdown, every succeeding battle to Clinton on every budget, iirc.

Clinton, Gingrich share stage in New Hampshire.(Originated from Knight-Ridder Newspapers)

CLAREMONT, N.H. _ It was no showdown; it was a love fest of mutual respect when House Speaker Newt Gingrich and President Clinton staged an outdoor debate here Sunday.

Before their answers to the first question were finished, the two rivals were shaking hands in agreement that Washington needs to form a bipartisan commission to reform lobbying law.

``You want to do it on lobby reform?,'' Clinton said, interrupting Gingrich. ``In a heartbeat. I accept.''

``Let's shake hands,'' Gingrich said, and they did, as some 300 senior citizens seated at outdoor picnic ...

The moral ? Maybe in politics, sitting down and actually talking about issues, with people with whom you disagree (but have to work with) works better than bricks.

If anyone reading this knows more about that event I would appreciate hearing about it. The atmospherics were wonderful on WMUR...a warm summer night as I remember.
It struck me then that giving in, in a way was Clinton's strength. He, as Presdient Oabam palinly proved again, was opposition.

Quite a week for the President, and given them monetous nature of what's transpiring before our eyes, the world.
"rt@Steven Place Healthcare reform, nuclear arms accord with Russia, AND $40 Billion in financial aid for low income and middle class students, ALL in the same WEEK!?!? Regardless of your political affiliation, you must admit...that's pretty awesome. Obama, you sir are The Man."
