That's Because It Has Nothing to Do with RNC, Steele

by: Dean Barker

Tue Apr 06, 2010 at 18:57:32 PM EDT

Sean Mahoney, widely expected to run for congress, can't do so until he resigns as an RNC committeemember:
under Republican Party rules his resignation is a required step before entering or supporting a candidate in a Republican primary.
So what to do after the news that Rich Ashooh has raised a whole lot of dough in just eight weeks, potentially crowding out the Not Guinta vote?

Use resigning over embattled RNC Chair Steele as a way to get some nice national press. I have to hand it to Mr. Mahoney; that was a clever chess move.

Fellow committeemember Phyllis Woods was surprised (h/t Pindell):

New Hampshire National Committeewoman writes FrumForum  to say that she is "frankly dismayed and surprised that Sean did not discuss this with me and I am still waiting to hear from our State Chairman, John Sununu, to see if he was aware of this situation."
Well, that's because this situation has nothing to do with party politics, imo, and everything to do with running for congress:
...the letter, first posted by the New Hampshire Union Leader, isn't necessary in the first place. National committeemembers are elected by state parties; anyone who resigns would by rule have to submit their resignation to a state party rather than a national party, suggesting Mahoney wanted the press hit.

Certainly, parts of the letter read like a declaration of candidacy.

Ashooh, who?

p.s. A big tip of the hat to eagle-eyed JonnyB for picking up on the foreshadowing.

Is anybody really paying attention? (4.00 / 1)
Seems to me that Ashooh and Mahoney will be sticking their hands in the same cookie jar.  This has the makings of a disaster for the Republicans, can you hear me chortling?

It's a free for all now, with the race on to see who can best ingratiate themselves with the Tea Baggers.  That's what Papa Sununu is doing - he's the human lightening rod.  He certainly casts a big enough shadow to cover the nitwits running.

Every candidate brings a string of supporters to (0.00 / 0)
the party.  As long as they are all committed to supporting the winner of the primary, that's what I'd call party building.

Hmm. Bold Republican leadership is going to mean (4.00 / 2)
boldly denouncing Republican leadership.

Interesting marketing problem.

G.O.P. Squirms as Spotlight Focuses on Its Leader

That concern spiked as Mr. Steele fired his chief of staff, Ken McKay - a popular figure who, Republicans said, learned of his dismissal when his wife saw the report on MSNBC - implicitly blaming him for spending abuses, including the strip club, that Mr. Steele said he had only learned about by reading his committee's report to the Federal Election Commission.

On Tuesday, Sean Mahoney, one of three Republican National Committee members from New Hampshire, resigned, giving The Union Leader of New Hampshire a copy of a letter that excoriated Mr. Steele for the spending abuses. "The recent scandal involving R.N.C. funds being used to entertain a small crowd at a Los Angeles strip club is the straw that broke the camel's back," Mr. Mahoney wrote.

Sounds like Sean is complaining that they kept the crowd too small. Maybe next time they'll take you kid, but you need to 'work it'.

Sean needs to be careful (0.00 / 0)
Sean Mahoney should be very careful of not appearing like a faker, which he does in this instance, as the moniker "Phoney Mahoney" is really easy to use.
