"This Gigantic Conspiracy Against Liberty and Law"

by: Dean Barker

I thought the best way we could honor Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell's slavery-free declaration of Confederate History Month would be to highlight our role in the Great Rebellion.

New Hampshire Governor Ichabod Goodwin to the General Court, 5 June 1861:

Is it just me? (4.00 / 1)
Am I the only one who thinks that putting in a recogntion of the horrors of slavery doesn't make these confederate history proclamations okay?

It Did Happen (0.00 / 0)
Conservative Rep David Welch said it didn't matter if you were for them or against them, there were 14 New Hampshire citizens who fought against Franco in the Spanish Civil War (1936-39)and therefore deserved to be recognized and honored with a plaque in the State House.

Of course slavery must be acknowledged, but it's absurd to pretend the war against secession, whatever one calls it, did not happen; it did.
These were not all evil men who fought for the Confederacy, not slavemasters, just citizens who felt they were defending their nation from outside aggression. You can't pretend away inconvenient history.

Burt, the capacity of human beings for wrongheaded justification of their actions is no excuse for actions that were wrong.  It is absurd to pretend that the secesssion of the southern states was anything other than, as stated above, a conspiracy to overthrow our constitution.

You are as wrong on this today as you were 12 months ago. Go ahead and have the last word if you want.

Kathy secession was not, as you say "a conspiracy to overthrow our constitution."

Many thought, many still do think, that the US is a voluntary association of states. While the north certainly won militarily, the constitutionality of secession remains open for discussion.

The Confederate States of America becoming independent would have no effect on the Constitution of the United States of America. We northerners could certainly keep our Constitution intact.

You want a last shot? Go for it.
