DeJoie Withdraws, Supports Swett

by: Mike Hoefer

Tue May 04, 2010 at 10:22:04 AM EDT

John got in to the race early and did some great outreach to the netroots and progressives in the state. I'm sure I speak for all when I thank him for service. I was looking forward to hearing more from John and hoped his involvement would help this to be an issue based campaign.

Not sure we can blame our crummy primary timing, but it should would have been nice for all three candidates to have more time together to discusse their approaches to governance and unique attributes.

I'm sure it's not the last of John we will seen in NH Politics.

Full Press Releases below the fold.

Mike Hoefer :: DeJoie Withdraws, Supports Swett
DeJoie Withdraws From Congressional Race
(Concord , NH) - John DeJoie, democratic candidate for US Congress in New Hampshire's Second Congressional District (NH-02), announced that he is no longer a candidate for US Congress in the 2010 election. DeJoie cited family reasons for exiting the race.Following is the text of his remarks.

My dad worked two full time jobs to provide for his family. He drove a truck by day and a cab at night. As a young boy, all I knew was that my dad was never home. It wasn't until he was hired as a mailman that he knew he could provide for his family.  A mailman is not a glamorous job, but it gave him everything he dreamed of - a steady paycheck, healthcare and retirement. This is the dream for middle class working families.

It is also the dream that is out of reach of many families. It is out of reach for 12% of our NH friends and neighbors who are unemployed or underemployed. It is out of reach for 30% of construction workers. Out of reach for many workers who have been unemployed for 4 months, eight months, and some more than a year. Fighting for middle class working families is why I began this race, and what I have talked about everyday for the past 9 months.

As my dad always put his family first, so too, I put my family first. As my wife, Linda, and I work to give our children more opportunity than we had; as my daughter follows her dream of searching for and attending college; as my son continues his high school education and his dream of becoming a guitarist, I am faced with reordering my priorities. In order to put my family first, I today announce that I will no longer be a candidate for US Congress.

I am not a wealthy man, do not come from a wealthy family or have wealthy friends. The families I am fighting for contributed what they could, but the financial disparity created obstacles.  These obstacles meant we had to work to build a network across the district. I am honored and humbled by the support that we received. I am indebted to these hard working middle class families who worked so hard for this campaign over the past 9 months.

I have been fighting for middle class working families my entire adult life, and even though I am no longer a candidate, I will continue that fight. I will put my efforts into electing the candidate who shares my passion and who understands the issues facing middle class working families and who will fight for all of us in the United States Congress.  I will put my efforts into electing Katrina Swett.

What an odd rant:
I just had the opportunity to check out Ann McLane Kuster's website, and she is someone who needs to be stopped any way possible.  I encourage all moderate and conservative Democrats to cast their vote for Katrina Swett in the September primary.  Ann McLane Kuster makes Carol Shea-Porter look like a conservative.  Her mother, Susan McLane, served in the state Senate as the ultimate RINO, a Liz Hager of yesteryear.  To start with, her daughter Ann McLane Kuster has the endorsement of every Femi-NAZI group there is.   She has NARAL,  Emily's List, NOW, the Women's Campaign Fund, and the Feminist Majority, and she's running against another pro-choice woman!  She proudly states on her website that she supports affirmative action, and she supports President Obama's goal of having class-based affirmative action as well.  She supports gay marriage and obviously abortion, but she goes on to say how she's a strong advocate of families.  She supports a public option for health insurance.  In the same paragraph where she advocates passing "real healthcare reform" she refers to herself as a "frugal Yankee".  Thankfully, she probably picked the wrong year to run.  New Hampshire doesn't need another ultra-liberal in Congress.  Say NO to Ann McLane Kuster!

Whoever this loser is, his only motive is to sow discord in our primary.  Am surprised that you took the bait, Jack.

Will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you weren't trying to compare Rep. DeJoie's endorsement to that of this RedHampshire nutbag.

Nutty Buddy (0.00 / 0)
DeJoie thinks Swett is the best choice between the two remaining candidates. Now that there are only two, folks can get to the gettin' to it, if you're picking up what I'm laying down.

This Claus loser must not think Swett is ultimately a threat to the GOP. See how he tears into Annie's credentials, trying to portray them as a negative?

Only a nutbag would try to portray a positive as a negative.

So, Team Kuster is going to use anonymous threads by some screwball on RedHampshire to make their case?

Bad move.

The constant stream of negativity and snark is not doing Annie any good. In fact, it might be what prompted John to endorse Katrina.

Careful (4.00 / 3)
Just because Jack has publicly announced his support for AMK does not mean "Team Kuster" is involved.

So far as I know Jack is not a paid blogger nor does he represent the campaign in any official way here on BH.  So your Inference the "TEAM Kuster" is doing anything is not accurate.

Also, what "constant stream of negativity and snark" from the campaign are you referring too? If you are referencing one supporters comments on BH it would be insane to think that had anything to do with John decision support Katrina.

What I find odd is, if I wrote this:
If he had a big block of voters he could transfer over to Swett, that would be one thing," Scala said.

It would be flogged as an ATTACK!!!!!

But Scala gets a pass.

If I post Scala saying this:

"But if he had a big block of voters, he would still be in the race."

Still an attack? An insult? What did I did wrong now?
------------------------------------------------------

I think it is interesting that there is a growing concern that a testy primary will lead to a lack of unity going into November. I agree, if it got really nasty.

But let's look at the snipe about Annie being a "lobbyist." That velvet shiv is designed to peel off primary voters. But wait for the after taste.

Not only was Annie a "lobbyist," which true liberals hate, right? (Primary Bomb) She represents "pro-choice" interests! That, my fellow Hampsters, was intended to linger into the General.

This sets up a narrative that Annie will have a hard time making "the pivot." That is what ClarenceClaus was trying to set up.

PS. The SOS will tell you, there are good lobbyists.

Right You Are Jack (0.00 / 0)
I speak from experience. Senators are each on 4 or 5 committees and can't possibly be knowledgeable enough about each and every single issue on which we'd have to vote. Lobbyists provide helpful information. Senators can choose to listen or not. I learned it's just plain wrong to disparage all people who work as lobbyists. They provide an important service.

Senators often might feel strongly about an issue and lobbyists would help us tremendously by giving us data and facts to help bolster the argument we chose to make. They help us have the facts to pass good legislation and defeat bad legislation.

Funny (4.00 / 1)
This guy certainly sounds like a clever strategist.  I guess that's why he tried to "appeal" to Democratic primary voters by using terms like "Femi-NAZI" and attacking choice, civil rights, and healthcare reform. (That always works!)

Jack, it seems to me that Claus is more scared of Katrina than Annie.  If not, then why would he make such a pathetic attempt to undermine her with primary voters?

Whoever he is, he certainly found a sucker in you, my friend.

not only do you post this garbage (4.00 / 1)
as if it has some sort of credence, Jack - you include a link from our site to theirs, and on top of that you try to present it as having some vague connection to DeJoie, Swett, Kuster?

I call bullshit on that.

Kuster statement (4.00 / 4)
CONCORD, NH - The following is a statement by Democratic congressional candidate Ann McLane Kuster on Representative DeJoie's decision to end his campaign:

"John has been a champion for working families on the campaign trail and in the legislature.  I'm proud to have stood side-by-side with him in the fight for good jobs, expanding access to health care, and reforming Wall Street - and I look forward to working with him to champion these causes in the fall election."

John Is A Principled Man... (4.00 / 4)
...and I'm just hoping we'll have him continue to be involved.  As an observer from afar (the Seacoast), it was looking like a fantastic Democratic contest for the primary in the Second District.  It still will be, and I had no #1 choice between John, or two other excellent Democrats -- Ann McLane Kuster or Katrina Swett.  But to lose John's voice as a candidate is a loss for the level of discussion.  Whomever is the final choice in September, the Republican nominee will be outclassed in November.

Well said. (4.00 / 4)
John's "stump speech" was outstanding.

My mother's words have proven to be true for me over and over again: "when one door closes an even better one always opens up". John DeJoie has limitless opportunities.

was not enough, apparently its a smart move to pull out when it's clear he won't be be able to get his message out...what the endorsement means is anybody's guess ??

Disappointing (0.00 / 0)
John is a good man and while I don't agree with all of his policies, I think he would have been a good Rep. to Congress.
While he seems to have done the best thing for himself and his family, I don't understand why he would drop out at this point (and I will never understand why people quit early like this either).
First, you never know what the electorate is going to do, money or no money, especially during a volatile time of our process, economy, and lives.
In addition, he has spent what, nearly a year of his life running. Why quit now? You've invested endless amounts of time to run. Better to go through the process and do the best that you can. There is no indignity in losing ... and there was no guarantee that John would have lost this race either.
That all said, his choice then to endorse Swett, who kinda pushed him out of the race by getting in, is a little puzzling. The assumption would be that his positions would be more in line with Kuster. And, against Swett and all her influence and money, Kuster sure could have used a DeJoie endorsement. Some folks will make the case that Swett isn't the most "progressive" candidate because of her previous position on the invasion, and other things (I have made that case before too on my blog and then, later, realized, well, people can change their minds, can't they?).
Now, this makes me wonder, will someone else jump in or, is it too late?

Not puzzling at all (0.00 / 0)
Katrina Swett is, above all, a good woman who treats people with respect and dignity. She doesn't brush someone off based on their social or economic status, and never, ever looks down her nose at anyone.

What is with this "never, ever looks down her nose at anyone"?

Are you actually accusing a Democrat of doing that?

Are you really falling for the right wing nonsense accusing good Democrats of "looking down their noses?" That's really harmful. And stupid, frankly.

It's the plutocratic Republicans who are the elitists! Do not let anyone get away with such ridiculous garbage talk about any Democrat.!

Oh, unless that is you want the Republicans to win the seat.

Money and Politics (4.00 / 2)
I found this particular part of his statement very thought provoking: "I am not a wealthy man, do not come from a wealthy family or have wealthy friends. The families I am fighting for contributed what they could, but the financial disparity created obstacles.  These obstacles meant we had to work to build a network across the district. I am honored and humbled by the support that we received. I am indebted to these hard working middle class families who worked so hard for this campaign over the past 9 months."

Can we only elect the wealthy and well connected? I ask that seriously. In the democratic primary campaign to see who would contest senunu in 2008 I got to hear 3 out of the 4 contenders speak (the fourth hadn't joined the race yet). Out of the three I heard, the 2 least monied and connected ones had the most interesting and innovative ideas. In the end, when the fourth candidate joined the race, the other three dropped out, and endorsed her. In my view, either of the three were more progressive and interesting candidates. They were forced about by the other candidates ability to raise money through her connections. Don't get me wrong, I am happy Sennunu is gone, and Shaheen is in, but I have never forgotten the lesson I learned. In politics it seems, money counts more than ability.

Rewrting History? (4.00 / 5)
Both Katrina Swett and Steve Marchand had made a commitment that they would leave the race if Jeanne Shaheen decided to run. They made that commitment voluntarily before Jeanne Shaheen got into the race.  Jay Buckey did not drop out when Jeanne Shaheen entered the race; she decided to run in September, 2007, and Jay stayed in the race until after the presidential primary in January.  He raised about $135,000 by that point. Marchand showed some early fundraising legs, as he had raised about $250,000 when he left in September.

Jeanne Shaheen was qualified, experienced, the most well known, and the most likely to beat John Sununu. She has been an extraordinarily effective senator.

Having said all that, unfortunately it is the case that more and more we see self funders, like Binnie and Bender in this year's Republican senate primary.

Not everybody was aware (4.00 / 2)
of these commitments to drop out. That being said, I've been pleasantly surprised with Senator Shaheen's positions in the Senate. She hasn't taken a vote (that I'm aware of) with which I disagree.

Not only did they each say it frequently... (0.00 / 0)
I believe they both mentioned it when they withdrew.

I remember (4.00 / 1)
Steve Marchand saying it up front.

But when they were in my area for a local Dem picnic, none mentioned it.

It would look silly to do so: make a case for your candidacy and at the same time say, "By the way, I'm getting out if Governor Shaheen gets in?"

Not everybody follows every race from start to finish the way we do.:)

Like you, my view of Shaheen has improved alot..... (0.00 / 0)
That being said, there was a vote in the Senate to enforce anti-trust laws on financial institutions so that they couldn't become "too big to fail."Th bill failed, unfortunately, with 29 Democrats supporting it along with 3 republicans, (Ensign, Shelby, and Coburn) and 1 independent. Among the 27 Democrats opposed to the bill, was our dear Senator from New Hampshire. That's certainly not "change I can believe in." Big money and old money don't want that tampered with, and I want to believe our Senator from New Hampshire would stand up to them.

http://www.opencongress.org/ar...

As far as the other comments, I think that I should retract "forced out." The candidates knew this was a possibility, and stepped aside because they knew Shaheen had the resources. I guess the best I can say is, as a young democrat, I was deeply frustrated by the apparent fact that money, pull, and name recognition, mattered more than ideas. I realize that the candidates that left the race did so of their own volition, and for the good of the party and the state. I just regret the primary being over and done with before the voters could have imput, before the party could have the important public exchange of ideas. Yes, we need to elect democrats, but we also need to elect good democrats, and have a process that supports those internal discussions. I am not accusing Shaheen of being a bad democrat, don't take that from this, I am simply asking if we are doing the process in a way that is best for our country and our party.
