Judd Gregg Forces Lazy Jobless to Look for Work

by: Dean Barker

Thu Jul 01, 2010 at 09:39:33 AM EDT

For the umpteenth time:
More than 1.3 million laid-off workers won't get their unemployment benefits reinstated before Congress goes on a weeklong vacation for Independence Day.

An additional 200,000 people who have been without a job for at least six months stand to lose their benefits each week, unless Congress acts.

As for the title of this post, how else am I supposed to interpret Gregg's rationale for stripping jobless benefits from the unemployed?
Because you're out of the recession, you're starting to see growth and you're clearly going to dampen the capacity of that growth if you basically keep an economy that encourages people to, rather than go out and look for work, to stay on unemployment.
Congratulations, Senator.  You sure showed those lazybones.  What we need in DC is more Stern Daddy Morality* just like you have displayed. "Cruel to be kind," "Why buy the cow when the milk's for free?", etc., etc...

* NB: Side effects of Stern Daddy Morality may include loaning out billions of dollars to failed Banksters.

The May jobless numbers follow earlier reports this Spring, showing a growing number of young veterans among those out of work.

Bill Would Help Jobless Veterans

...thousands of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who have come home to find their military training of little apparent value in today's civilian economy. Despite signs that the recession has ended and unemployment has leveled off, the jobless rate among young vets is 21.2 percent, according to the Labor Department.

And it's getting worse -- in 2008, just 14 percent of vets age 18 to 24 were jobless.

"One in five of our nation's heroes, dedicated and disciplined workers, can't find a job to support their families, don't have an income that gives them stability," Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., said Tuesday. "How can this be?"

Murray led a bipartisan group of senators Tuesday in introducing legislation to provide special job training and placement assistance to new veterans. Her Veterans Employment Act of 2010 would:
* Extend the "Post 9/11 GI Bill," passed in 2008 to cover the cost of apprenticeship and vocational training programs for veterans. The law currently pays only the cost of tuition and living expenses for veterans pursuing a college degree.

* Create a Veteran Business Center in the federal Small Business Administration to give vets training and counseling in starting their own small businesses.

* Create pilot programs to help veterans market the technical skills they gain in the military to get civilian jobs.

* Create a pair of grant programs to help connect veterans to new "green jobs" on environmental and alternative energy projects.

Whack-a-mole, anyone?

Jobless Veterans (0.00 / 0)
From IAVA:
The Bureau of Labor Statistics just released their jobs report for the month of June, and the economic situation for new veterans looks bleak.

Numbers you need to know:

11.5 percent:  Iraq and Afghanistan-era veterans' unemployment rate in June.

9.5 percent: national unemployment rate in June.

12.5 percent: average unemployment rate of new veterans during the first six months of 2010.

Gregg's voting (0.00 / 0)
Maybe, like, he actually read the Constitution and couldn't find a delegated power that would allow Congress to legislate on this matter.

And before you go off on a rant about the ICC, just remember that someday maybe the GOP will control Congress and would want to legislate on something we don't like.

We? (0.00 / 0)
Maybe, like, he cherry picks what he needs from the Constitution and applies it at his convenience.

And only SCOTUS gets to do that, if I read my Constitution right.

Whack-a-mole, anyone?

O' you know, Sue, people who think that the document to which our representatives have taken an oath to support actually might mean something along the lines of the words actually found in that document.

Where in the constitution is it written (4.00 / 1)
that the unemployed will not look for work if they get jobless benefits for too long?

Because that's Judd Gregg's own stated rationale for blocking the benefits.

Are you claiming that the entire unemployment insurance system is unconstitutional?

Gregg hasn't made that claim.
