NOM and the Rally That Wasn't

by: blueyblue

(Great writeup.  Part put below the fold, and thanks. - promoted by Dean Barker)

This is a public thank you to everyone who made it down to Manchester today as we stood as silent witnesses for equality against the National Organization for Marriage's unwelcome stop in New Hampshire on its nationwide bus tour.

Well, at least they're persistent. NOM pours money into the state to keep trying to thwart New Hampshire's decisions, attack our representatives and our governor (the only governor in the nation to sign a marriage equality bill!) and ignore our strong tradition of protecting civil liberties. We were there in Manchester today to bear witness to New Hampshire's commitment to marriage equality as NOM attempted to spread its lies here.

blueyblue :: NOM and the Rally That Wasn't

It's of course difficult to stay calm when you're listening to insults and lies about who you are, the worthlessness of your family and the danger to your children. (My partner, Bob, and I didn't bring our two daughters; we didn't want them hearing such hateful speech). The pro-equality group was good, though.  It was enough for us to publicly show a steadfast presence in the face of the vitriol NOM was spouting.

The numbers were interesting, too.  NOM and Cornerstone Policy Research were able to get about 75-85 staffers and supporters to show up after weeks of organizing. I sent out a Facebook link two days ago, and we had almost 50 people show up. Thank you, New Hampshire! And thank you to supportive organizations and individuals who shared that link.

I want to thank especially my pastor, Rev. Carla Bailey, and the UCC Conference Minister for New Hampshire, Rev. Gary Schulte, for standing with us.  I think it's important to show that people of faith can and do believe in and stand up for equality.  We can believe in and stand up for the truth that God gives grace into every human life.

It's clear to me that the small numbers of NOM supporters are just another example of how the anti-equality forces are losing ground in the Granite State. In the past year, we passed marriage equality, defeated a repeal bill by almost 2-to-1, and, just this past spring, town after town stood up to oppose discrimination and to affirm equality. Of the 222 communities in New Hampshire, only 61 voted against marriage equality.  NOM sure has a long way to go in this state!

I am especially proud of my town, Hanover, where we submitted our own resolution since they couldn't get anyone to petition for the other one.

Article 23: To see if the Town will vote to affirm our state constitution's guarantee that all persons are "equally free and independent". We therefore strongly affirm the new marriage equality law, which promises equal freedom, dignity and respect for all our citizens. We also strongly condemn the efforts by some to repeal the new marriage law and enshrine discrimination in our constitution, all in order to deny our fellow citizens the fundamental right of equality to which we are all entitled.

The resolution passed 141 to 6!  That's real New Hampshire people strongly affirming the tradition of our state and the reality that equality is a fundamental part of any democratic society. I hope NOM got the message this time.

I was proud to stand with my fellow Granite Staters today to bear witness to our great state's commitment to equality.  "Live Free or Die" really means something to our citizens.  And so does the belief that marriage is about love and commitment.  And that's something to celebrate.

Great Job In Hanover, David... (0.00 / 0)
...and let's see, some 85 NOM attendees today?  That's just about the same number who went to the "news conference" in the Legislative Office Building last January when the announcement was made that there would be an effort to put the issue of repeal of House Bill 436 on the ballot of towns.

Let's see, most towns didn't have it on the ballot, and we won the majority of those that did, as shown by Hanover.

So, it doesn't seem like they're gaining any strenth.  At that LOB news conference, which I quietly attended, there were a lot of angry frowing faces.  Maybe the sunshine today forced them to squint more?

Equality is a given. (0.00 / 0)
The question is whether it is recognized and respected by those who deliver public services and keep public records.  The question is whether our public servants carry out the obligations of the official positions to which they've been elected and appointed.
It's really unseemly for public officials to pull a "Bartleby" and simply declare "I prefer not to."  If public officials don't fulfill the obligations with which they are charged by the Constitutions they are pledged to uphold, then they need to be dismissed.
There is also no reason to thank people who are getting paid to do a job.  On the other hand, it's unreasonable to expect some citizens to take up the obligations of public office for ever, so others (the freeloaders) can critique them.  Voting is not enough, if the tyranical impulse is to be kept in check.  Every citizen has to do his/her part.

About the need to thank people who are paid to do a job... (4.00 / 1)
Once again, let me reiterate the difference between elected officials.

FEDERAL elected officials get paid to do a job.  STATE Reps and Senators get $200 per biennium plus mileage, and are virtual volunteers.

And as a matter of courtesy and respect, I thank people for doing the jobs they are paid to do all the time.  I thank our military, police, firefighters, health care professionals, teachers, the folks who keep my plumbing, heating, electrical and other systems running, and the lady who cuts my hair.  I thank them regularly, and I thank all of them again here.

There is always a reason to thank people for doing a job well, whether they are paid or not.  It makes life just that much more pleasant for all of us.

Case in point--among the great pictures posted with this diary, there was one of a young man holding a sign reading "Thank you Governor Lynch and State Legislators."  Just seeing that photo gave me a thrill, reminded me why I do my job, and made my day.

Not surprising (0.00 / 0)
that the Union Leader made no mention of the paltry number of anti-equality folks or the size of the rally since it would reveal the inaccuracies of their ongoing editorial bent against gay rights.

I had quite the chuckle over that too. (0.00 / 0)

2012 starts today.

Anyone notice . . . (4.00 / 1)
. . . that the UL's comments section is running almost 3:1 opposed to NOM's bizzaro world of hatred?  Those are real people (i.e., voters) educating NOM about the real world the rest of us live in.

It is ALWAYS appropriate to say thank you. (4.00 / 2)

2012 starts today.

Thanks for sharing what happened. (4.00 / 1)
What a great message and response to NOM's anger and lies!

Thom Simmons also has a great piece this morning, breaking down and researching the speeches and speakers.
