I Hate Money in Politics - (A Rant)

by: smucci

Cross posted at Daily Kos

It's been almost a year since I posted a diary although I comment occasionally and lurk often.  Politics has had to take a back seat to paying the bills and other energy draining activities that I never anticipated having to struggle with as I approached my 60th year.  However, as the primary and the election approach the intensity of the fund raising has increased from the usual constant drone to a deafening cacophony.  I hate it!

smucci :: I Hate Money in Politics - (A Rant)
Really it's so wrong to put our candidates in the position of generating money constantly. The time could be better spent generating ideas and meeting constituents. Think of all the talented, creative, dedicated people who never become candidates or fall by the wayside because of the money requirement. I'm not saying that our candidates aren't talented, creative and dedicated.  I am saying that a different system would give us more to work with and would raise the bar for everyone.  Money or the ability to raise it should not be the defining characteristic of our elected officials.  But it is and I hate it.  So what?

Another aspect is how does one decide where to spend their "charity dollars" if lucky enough to have a few to spend?  There are races all around the country that I care deeply about thanks to the connectedness of the internet.  Should I send $5.00 or $10.00 to each?  How about the humane society?  Animals are suffering in this down economy and need to be fed.  The local food pantry is often in trouble.  Then there's the homeless shelter.  And since we won't shop at Walmart and we spend more on locally grown produce we have less money to spend.  I hate that lack of money is the source of so much misery.

Now, here in NH I already know that I will put my money and time (little as it is) to help Paul Hodes and Carol Shea-Porter. My rep, my senator. So I have ignored the e-mails and phone calls from the other race as if they were from another state.  I comfort myself that Annie will win the primary and go on to win the election without me. I'm small fish in a puddle when it comes to campaign contributions.  I hate that I don't have enough to give everywhere I want.  But I don't.

But I happened to pick up the phone last night and it was Annie herself.  I'm sure I'm on the list as a supporter.  I hate that she would have to spend even a second talking to me about the need for money.  But she did, because she does. Even though she has raised lots of money the primary has turned into one of those TV battles that sucks up money.  What a waste.  I hate it!

But I hate the idea of her opponent who is, in my opinion, more connected to the corporate republican philosophy than the progressive democratic one I prefer, buying the nomination.  Because I do prefer her over Charlie Bass, but not by much and either way we all loose. I hate this situation.

So I'm making a contribution http://www.kusterforcongress.com/

I hate that I can't do more.

There's money and then there's m-o-n-e-y (4.00 / 2)
In NH. it is hard to raise enough money to run a viable campaign. Especially since to GOPers are so willing to put a "for sale" sign on their forehead.

That said, I am SO GLAD that Annie is working double time to collect small dollar donations from NH residents. She gets it. And so do her suppporters!

How not to do it? See PAC master Bass.

I wish I could rap.

Don't minimize your importance. That's how Obama raised record amounts, from the small donors who gave 25. a month over the internet. Those are critical donations and they added up by the millions. Its not the same in a state race of course, but wouldn't you rather give 25 bucks to the candidate your neighbors are giving to, the one who knows you by name, than to the one who's money comes from away ? As far as philosophy, I'd like to hear Katrina recant support for the Bush tax cuts. With squishy Senators like Kent Conrad  starting to back away from letting the Bush Tax Cuts die, its important to remember they were tax cuts for 2% richest of Americans. 98% of us never saw those benefits. We pay their taxes now, and through interest payment on the debt we'll be paying off the tax breaks for the rich for years. Whoop de doo.

note to close readers: this might be sarcastic so think twice before reading to candidates for use in their attacks on each other

I'd like to hear Katrina (0.00 / 0)
recant her run for office. It's been awhile since I've been here so I don't know how graphic I can be but...you know what I'm thinking

There's a theory that people who accumulate heaps of money (0.00 / 0)
will spend it ("invest") on socially useful long-lasting and income-producing enterprises.  This theory assumes that people who hoard money are different from people who hoard other worthless stuff (cancelled stamps, bottles, sea shells, aluminum cans, etc.).  There's no evidence that this assumption is correct and lots of evidence that, like other hoarders, if they let go of the stuff, it's only to pass it around among their friends, like baseball cards.

The problem we have is that, while the paper dollar is intrinsically worthless and the Treasury can always issue more, the hoarding behavior is very disruptive to normal exchange and trade because the economy doesn't run very smoothly unless it's lubricated by currency.

Hoarding is not conducive to social intercourse.  Let me leave it at that.

I wish she didn't have to work so hard (0.00 / 0)
at collecting money.  It doesn't seem right and to spend it to defend herself from a primary onslaught.Grrrrrrrr...
