NH GOP: DROWNING IN DIRTY MONEY

by: EBrowne

Fri Jul 30, 2010 at 12:02:57 PM EDT

Ayotte, Gregg and the NH GOP All Clinging to Tainted Campaign Contributions

CONCORD - Today, the New Hampshire Democratic Party called on the New Hampshire Republican Party to stop their disgraceful hypocrisy and return all the dirty money collected by their candidates and elected officials in recent years. News broke this morning that two Texas billionaires, both major conservative donors, were charged by the SEC with operating a $550 million securities fraud. [NYT, 7/30/10]

What's the New Hampshire connection? The brothers gave thousands to the campaigns of current Sen. Judd Gregg and former Sen. John E. Sununu [CQ Moneyline, accessed 7/30/10] .

"The New Hampshire GOP has surpassed the height of hypocrisy which is impressive, even for them. They're engaging in disgusting political stunts to try and shift focus away from the fact that their candidates sink deeper and deeper in the polls, the closer we get to Election Day," said Emily Browne, Press Secretary for the New Hampshire Democratic Party. "Seeing as Chairman Sununu still refuses to dump the $15,000 they took from Indian tribe clients of convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, this isn't a huge surprise."

The Texas brothers aren't the only tainted donors dogging the New Hampshire Republican Party. The NH GOP's front-running senate candidate Kelly Ayotte has accepted tens of thousands of dollars from Sen. Richard Shelby, currently being accused of doling out millions in federal earmarks in exchange for campaign contributions. [Politico, 7/29/10; Opensecrets.org, accessed 7/28/10]

"The NH GOP's favorite 2010 candidate is dogged by dirty donations of her own. Until the NH GOP and their star players like Kelly Ayotte and Judd Gregg come clean, it's pretty hard to take their requests seriously," said Browne.

"Judd Gregg has pocketed thousands from the two Texas billionaires charged with a $550 million securities fraud. Kelly Ayotte, the NH GOP's front-running candidate to replace him, has meanwhile been collecting tens of thousands of dollars from a sitting US Senator accused of exchanging federal earmarks for campaign contributions. And the Chairman's own son took contributions from the two Texas tycoons.

"Will Chairman Sununu call on Judd Gregg, his son, John E. Sununu, and Kelly Ayotte to return the money, or will they all stay silent and continue to engage in hypocritical, laughable attacks?" said Browne.

Americans for Campaign Finnace Reform a.k.a YouStreet.com (0.00 / 0)
Concord City Councilor and former Merrimack county Democratic Chair Rob Werner is spearheading this initiative in New Hampshire. The national group was founded by John Rauh, husband of NH Obama for President co-chair Mary Rauh.

Late last week legislation to update and improve the voluntary presidential public financing system was introduced in the Senate by Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) and in the House by Representatives David Price (D-NC), Mike Castle (R-DE), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Todd Platts (R-PA).

At its core, the legislation will make small donors the key to financing future presidential campaigns, drawing candidates away from the fat cat donors and bundlers looking to gain influence and access. The legislation provides for matching small contributions of $200 or less with public funds at a 4 to 1 ratio. That means that a simple $50 contribution from a concerned citizen to a presidential candidate would actually provide the candidate with $250 for their campaign.

Please Help Us Get This Legislation Passed.
http://salsa.democracyinaction...

In return for accepting matching public funds presidential candidates agree to limit their contributions to no more than $200 per contributor, or $1,000 for unmatched contributions--much less than the existing limit of $2,400 per person.

We're especially excited about this legislation because it recognizes and accepts the new world of Internet campaigning and the potential for serious, hardworking candidates to raise large numbers of small contributions from citizen donors who aren't seeking favors.

Our goal is to work with other reform organizations to get this legislation passed and in place in time for the 2012 presidential election. Because President Obama reiterated his strong support for reviving presidential public funding after opting out of the current outdated system in 2008, we are confident he will sign this bill into law if it is passed in the House and Senate.

Help Us In this Important Effort.

Taken together with the Fair Elections Now Act--our campaign to reform congressional campaign finance backed by 180 Members of Congress--this bill will help to eliminate the influence of special interests in our elections and raise the voices of average citizens who invest in candidates they believe in. It will enable more of our best leaders to run for public office, ensuring a diverse and lively debate on the big issues we face. It is long overdue.

Please Donate Today.

We hope you will join us in support of this important legislation.
