RedHampshire owned by a Washington DC publishing company?!?!

by: Vis Unita Fortior

Mon Aug 02, 2010 at 23:25:35 PM EDT

So I was bumming around browsing the web earlier and I decided to click on RedHampshire's "Terms of Use" link to see what rights I'd signed away when I joined the site.  I was greeted by this:
7. Limitation of Liability. Except as might be stated otherwise, neither RedHampshire, a subdivision of Eagle Publishing, Inc. nor any of its directors, employees, affiliates, associates or any other representatives will be liable for damages...

Caught RedHanded?

Vis Unita Fortior :: RedHampshire owned by a Washington DC publishing company?!?!
A couple of potential candidates that didn't pan out:

There was an Eagle Publishing in Vermont which evidently owns a bunch of papers around the NorthEast but in September 2009 it became Eagle Printing and Publishing LLC according to the November edition of this local paper, The Commons.  I also can't find a web site for them which would seem odd if they had the expertise to set up RedHampshire.  Here's a quote from Kevin Landrigan's column in November 2009 where he described them as "the company linked to the Pennsylvania media group that emerged as the suitor after its previous ownership sought bankruptcy protection four months ago" and wrote about the NH Executive Council giving them a $250,000 state guarantee loan.  They bought The Citizen of Laconia a couple of months ago.

There's also an Eagle Publishing in Hampshire in the UK but that seems even less likely.

Eagle Publishing, Inc., headquartered in Washington DC, describes itself as "America's leading conservative publishing company" and was founded in 1993.  It owns Regnery Publishing, the magazine Human Events, and RedState.com which they bought in 2007.

Both the RedState and RedHampshire websites appear to use the same content management system, Wordpress.

In site policy documents on both websites the exact wording "X, subdivision of Eagle Publishing, Inc." is used.  The same phrasing seems to have appeared in the past on Regnery's website.  Site policy documents on both RedState and RedHampshire exhibit the problem of "smart quotes" being converted to "’", which typically would happen when pasting text from Microsoft Word or something of that sort.

The "Terms of Use" page on RedHampshire is at the path "/terms-of-use/".  The "Terms of Service" page on RedState is at the path "/tos/".  The text of both legal documents is identical.  On RedHampshire when talking about future updates to the terms it actually says "These changes will be posted at http;//www.RedHampshire.com/tos/." - a page that does not actually exist on the RedHampshire site.

Here's the article published on RedState when Eagle bought it: "RedState & Eagle Publishing: Growing The Conservative Movement Online" (Google cache, the live copy doesn't seem to be working right now.)

For an example of the sort of people associated with the company: Donald Paul Hodel, a Secretary of Energy and Secretary of the Interior in the Reagan administration, executive and board member of a whole bunch of companies including lots of oil and gas and power companies, former President of the Christian Coalition, former Executive Vice President of Focus on the Family, and an executive of Salem Communications Corporation (Christian Radio, Conservative Talk, News Talk) has been on the board of Eagle Publishing for at least a few years now.  From Wikipedia, "In 2006, his company FreeEats.com/ccAdvertising was found to be disseminating political push polls on behalf of the "Economic Freedom Fund".

Pat Sajak of Wheel of Fortune is also a member of the board.  For details on other board members see the SourceWatch link.

NYTimes - in 2007 five authors sued Eagle Publishing for screwing them out of royalties by discounting their books.

I found mention of what might be a libel lawsuit against them that I think took place in Texas: Langston v. Eagle Publishing Company, but I couldn't find out anything more about it; maybe someone with access to a legal database could if it sounds interesting.

One last thing - does anyone know Tom DeRosa or Matt Suermann from outside of RedHampshire?  Are they actually local people?  Are they even writing from this state or are they working in a cubicle in a giant office building somewhere else in the country?

Thanks for slumming so I don't have to. (0.00 / 0)
Much of the conservative presence in the electronic media has been faux.  I think it was during the 2004 cycle that the assault against Daschel was launched by a couple of bloggers who claimed to be independent.  And there was a fellow in Maine whose posts showed up all over the country.  Syndication without being a formally admitted syndicate.

I'm not sure how many ordinary folk buy into it.  Mostly pundits latch on as a source of an opposite point of view.

The nice thing about opposites is that you can make them up out of whole cloth.  Think right sleeve and left sleeve in a coat.

One truely pernicious development is the evolution of the (4.00 / 1)
political campaign operatives, people who make a living touting people for public office in order to make a living.  If sex, rather than public policy, were on the menu, we'd call them pimps.

DeRosa and Suermann seem to be remnants from the Romney for President campaign.
Or perhaps, like a spore, waiting and looking for an opportunity to germinate again.  Self-centered twits.

Suermann's a Whuffie. (0.00 / 0)
Check it out

Um, wow. (4.00 / 3)
I'm going to decline commentary until we learn more about this.

However, I find the language similarity you point out in the terms of use to be most compelling.

And, FWIW, their about page states: "RedHampshire is not paid for or authorized by any political candidate or organization. The bills are paid entirely through advertising and our small wallet."

To be clear about Blue Hampshire: it was founded by Laura Clawson, Mike Caulfield, and me.  While Laura writes also for dKos, BH has no formal or business relationship with Markos.  I have an account under BlogAds which provides BH with a truly trivial amount of ad revenue, which I put towards the technical costs of running the site, and which are also fairly trivial. We are owned by no one.

Direct links to red state (4.00 / 1)
On the "terms of use" page, #3. Intellectual property
For more information on the trademarks and servicemarks of RedHampshire and the use or inappropriate use thereof, please review RedHampshire's copyright policy.

The link for the copyright policy is http://beta.redstate.com/copyr...

Then #8,General Representation and Warranty

You represent and warrant that (i) your use of the Website will be in strict accordance with the RedHampshire Privacy Policy,.."
and the "RedHampshire Privacy Policy" link is http://beta.redstate.com/privacy/

I'm sure there is an explanation.

Can someone explain to me why, if they love the Constitution so much, the right-wingers keep introducing amendments to change it?

Regnery bought Redstate (0.00 / 0)
a while ago, but I hadn't heard anything about similar right-wing welfare for state blogs.

Correction. (0.00 / 0)
Eagle Publishing bought RedState.

Regnery is a subsidiary of Eagle Pub.

Wordpress doesn't prove much... (0.00 / 0)
Wordpress doesn't prove much: it's a ubiquitous bloggers platform.

It would be interesting if an out of state company is subsidizing RedHampshire, because that company  can't be making very much money off the deal.  Probably about less than one visitor in 200 bothers to click on RedHampshire's Google ads, which are the site's only visible source of income.  (Unless, they are shaking down the campaigns of the candidates who post there.)  My wild-ass guesstimate is that this site gets about 2000 visitors a day... that means 10 Google ad clicks a day... which means about $5.00/day in revenue.  That's fine for a  hobby site or a self-promotional site, but not for a serious comemrcial enterprise.

(Obviously, should RedHampshire keep going for another year or two as I am sure it will, the NH Primary season will take place, which will cause a spike in traffic.)

Right wingers (4.00 / 2)
don't expect their media to make a profit.  They are heavily subsidized, as are their contributors, by rich folks.  All those think tanks and media companies do not live by the free market they keep telling us we all need.

[ Parent ]
Certainly (0.00 / 0)
I was presenting that more as additional circumstantial evidence; the main thing is that the Terms of Use explicitly states that RedHampshire is a subdivision of Eagle Publishing.

[ Parent ]
Not about the money. (4.00 / 3)
IF this is true (I'm withholding judgment in the hopes someone in the press or otherwise will confirm or disprove it), the strategy is not about profit.

If subsidizing a similar site on the "red" team can create the appearance of grassroots right-wing excitement on the other side, then it's a success. It's an inexpensive way to push right-wing narrative, which in turn can create profit down the road by helping Republicans gain power.  More of an investment, really.  I actually wonder why the left hasn't figured this out yet.

yup. (0.00 / 0)

Have you told a stranger today about Bill O'Brien and his Tea Party agenda? The people of NH deserve to hear about O'Brien  and his majority committed to destroying New Hampshire and remaking it into a armed survivalist preserve.

Tracked down RedHampshire's web host (0.00 / 0)
In case anyone in the press or otherwise wants to pursue this I've tracked down the web host of www.redhampshire.com.  It is hosted on a shared server with a company called WebHostingBuzz (www.webhostingbuzz.com) in Atlanta, Georgia.  The name of the server they're on is "buzzsg1.whbdns.com" and the name of their account is "redhamps".

This is not the same web host who hosts www.redstate.com and www.eaglepub.com; www.regnery.com is on a third, different web host and www.humanevents.com seems to be at yet a fourth (I'm not quite sure of that one, though.)

Even if they deny it (4.00 / 2)
Even if they deny it and claim that the RedHampshire site was simply built by Eagle Publishing on the model of RedState as a paid service to the founders of RedHampshire, and the statement in the Terms of Use page was simply an oversight during the copying from RedState, I will prefer to not believe them and imagine that this is all part of a massive conspiracy by Pat Sajak to take control of the NH Primary.  ;^)

RedHampshire has now locked me out (0.00 / 0)
I just went over there to ask which company was the owner because I was getting impatient and lo and behold I found that I'd been logged out of the site and that my password doesn't work anymore.  Even the password that is saved by my browser and automatically entered for me when I type my username in doesn't work.

Well this is getting exciting.  Darn good thing I posted to BH first, if I'd posted to RedHampshire it probably would have been mysteriously deleted.  I have to run out on an errand but I'll be back later in the afternoon.  If anyone with a working account wants to try posting the question be my guest.

Question submitted on RedHampshire (4.00 / 1)
I managed to set up a second account with which to ask the question.  The posts of new users have to be approved by an admin, though, so we'll see what happens - I want to give them the chance to officially refuse to answer the question, which will be the case if the post or the new account is deleted.

If the post is approved it will show up here:

http://www.redhampshire.com/?p=9551

Here is the text of the post:

This site owned by Eagle Publishing?

In the Terms of Use it says that RedHampshire is a subdivision of Eagle Publishing, Inc.

Is that Eagle Printing and Publishing LLC of Vermont or Eagle Publishing of Washington, DC?

Also, I'll mention that quite curiously, after posting about this to Blue Hampshire last night, this afternoon I have found myself locked out of RedHampshire.  So I created this second account to post this question.  No email in my inbox but I'm sure it's just a technical glitch or something.

(On the other hand, if this somewhat coincidentally-timed lockout was indeed an attempt to ban me from RedHampshire, simply ask me to leave and I won't come back. -VUF)

[ Parent ]
I guess that's the response (0.00 / 0)
The second account hasn't been deleted but its ability to even submit new posts for approval has been removed.  I can't see in the Wordpress dashboard whether the question I submitted yesterday has been deleted but as of 6PM today it's not showing up at the above URL nor anywhere else on the site as far as I can see.  No email in either of the inboxes.

Either way I think we pretty much have their answer.

Another thing: Yesterday, in addition to deleting or otherwise disabling my first account they also set something in Wordpress that prevented any login to any account at all from my IP address.  After I was able to create the second account and easily get around the restriction I think that they must have freaked out because today they're trying (unsuccessfully) to prevent me from even being able to view the site at all.

You should (0.00 / 0)
seek out local press to see if they are interested.  It would be best to have a press account of this one way or the other.

Another good idea is to search out other righty state blogs in other states, especially those that may have been launched as a counterpoint to a pre-existing lefty state blog, to see if they are similarly owned.

Because that right there would be a real story.

Any advice? (0.00 / 0)
Any advice on which press outlet(s) to contact?  Local or national, d'you think?  Should I try to contact as many as I can or go for a limited number of them?

[ Parent ]
IP addresses (0.00 / 0)
Assuming you have one of the standard internet carriers (Fairpoint, ComCast, Metrocast, etc.), you can get a new IP address just by turning off your router for a minute or two and powering it back up.

As for the media thing: the reporter who wd be most interested in this is Andy Sylvia.  I am not sure what his email is, but he is on this site and on Facebook.

[ Parent ]
Contacted (4.00 / 1)
I sent an email to Andy at the email listed here on BH... he must get a staggering amount of spam!  So let's hope he doesn't miss my message.

Thanks also for the idea of rebooting my router, but I have somewhat more sophisticated methods ;^)

Thanks Vis! (4.00 / 1)
News tips, whether they be from Democrats or Republicans, are always appreciated.

I'll ask my editors to see if anyone is interested in picking it up, but just to be clear, i'm non-partisan so i'd have to be as fair as possible to both sides.

maybe I should start a diary... but RedHampshire.com is down! (0.00 / 0)
RedHampshire.com has gone down.  It is currently under suspended status by its web host, WHBDNS.com (located in Auburn, Taxachusetts)

If you try to log on, you get redirected to: http://buzzsg1.whbdns.com/site...

which says:

The site is currently unavailable
Please contact your System Administrator

This is not a good time for them to crash and burn: it's just five weeks till some very lively primaries.

it's not that I was banned... (0.00 / 0)
This has nothing to do with me being banned or not banned.  I tried a proxy server and the site was still unavailable.

[ Parent ]
Traffic overload at RedHampshire (0.00 / 0)
I noticed this too yesterday.  Today this post claims that the site crashed due to a link from Drudge Report:

http://www.redhampshire.com/keith-halloran-doesnt-get-it/

I'd assume that the link was to this post from yesterday:

http://www.redhampshire.com/dem-state-rep-candidate-wishes-sarah-palin-and-levi-johnston-was-in-stevens-plane-crash/

If the above claim is true I would assume that they exceeded their bandwidth with the web host and their account got suspended.
