Nescire autem quid ante quam natus sis acciderit, id est semper esse puerum.
From Tully. Loosely: Moreover, not to know what happened before you were born, this is to be always a child.

Secretary Gates plans to retire in 2011 (4.00 / 1)
http://www.foreignpolicy.com/a...

While I disagree with many of the war policies of the two administrations he's served, I think Gates has been an excellent model of how a Cabinet official can serve in a non-partisan manner under a President of either party.  Ray LaHood is to be commended for that too, though DoT isn't as high profile as DoD.

That said, I think when he does leave, one of the many things President Obama should consider in picking a replacement is that it'd be nice, for once, to have a Secretary of Defense who is a Democrat with pre-established name recognition--if only to prove such a person can hold that job. Disagreements with war policy aside, the myth in politics that Republicans are the only ones who keep America safe needs to go away.

If President Bush's wolves are such a threat, can't we just give Sarah Palin a helicopter to deal with them?

Odd Note (0.00 / 0)
I had an odd note from some lady in Louisiana today. She wrote that she wished that I and the NHDP would die in a plane crash.

I had several reactions:
1. I felt sorry for her
2. I was irritated at Halloran and to a slightly lesser extent Rep. Horrigan
3.  Was angry at her
4.  Was bemused by the notepaper, it had an owl on it. Owls are a symbol of wisdom, also my mother liked owls, as she was a member of the organization of women legislators.
5. Wished I wasn't boarding a plane to go to a DNC meeting Wednesday.
6. Decided to post here and then move on.
