BREAKING: Somebody Likes Charlie Bass!

by: Dean Barker

Thu Oct 07, 2010 at 19:30:27 PM EDT

I finally found someone who likes Charlie Bass.  Several someones, actually!

Who are they?  All those out-of-state smear groups that are using the Citizens United decision to pump massive dollars into our little old CD2 race.  Smear groups that do not have to reveal their donors, who can be (and probably are) major multi-national corporations like BP and AIG that have no interest in protecting New Hampshire's middle class.

The Kuster campaign counts five groups so far totalling almost a half a million in spending. One of them is Americans for Prosperity, founded by David Koch:

One of Koch's companies, Invista, received the "Outsourcing Excellence Award" from the Outsourcing Center for its work exporting jobs to China. Another of his companies, Georgia Pacific, was included on Lou Dobbs' list of companies sending American jobs overseas. Koch Industries was the subject of two Justice Department suits accusing the company of being responsible for more than three hundred oil spills.
Full release from Team Kuster below the fold.
Dean Barker :: BREAKING: Somebody Likes Charlie Bass!

Five GOP Special Interest Groups Launch NH Ads to Bail Out Bass
$500k This Week from Oil Company & Job-Outsourcing Award-Winners, and more

CONCORD, NH - As Congressman Bass falls in the polls and fails to keep pace in fundraising, five different 'independent' Republican groups rushed to buy almost $500,000 in air time in New Hampshire this week to help Bass hide from his twelve-year record of ushering-in the economic mess that our country is dealing with today.

"In Washington, Congressman Bass supported subsidies for oil companies and bailouts for big Wall Street executives - now those same interests are subsidizing his campaign and bailing-out his faltering effort," said Kuster Communications Director Neil Sroka

In the past 48 hours, five outside groups have rushed to Bass' defense, including one -- Americans for Prosperity -- funded by a billionaire oil executive whose company won the "Outsourcing Excellence Award" for its work shipping American jobs to China.

   *** FOR THE WEEK OF 10/5 - 10/11 ***

AMERICANS FOR PROSPERITY --- $44,568 in television ads

NATIONAL REPUBLICAN CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE --- $137,833 in television ads

REVERE AMERICA PAC --- $241,571 in television ads

NATIONAL FEDERAL OF INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES --- $40,415 in radio ads

SAFARI CLUB INTERNATIONAL PAC   --- $6,000 for online ads

Voters interested in learning the real record that these out-of-state interest groups are trying to cover-up can get the facts at www.NHFactCheck.com.
"It's no wonder Congressman Bass' out-of-state friends are rushing to his defense. His support for tax breaks for big oil and tax loopholes for companies that outsource jobs matches the agenda of these shady, outside groups," said Sroka. "Charlie's outsourcing friends are understandably concerned about Annie Kuster's plan to close the tax loopholes he supported during his twelve years in Washington."

Founded by billionaire oil executive David Koch, Americans for Prosperity has made waves this election cycle for channeling corporate cash into negative and misleading advertisements aimed at electing candidates sympathetic to their interests.

Like Americans for Prosperity, Revere America has taken advantage of a new loophole opened up by the Citizens United decision, allowing it to funnel corporate donations to political advertisements without disclosing the identity of donors. The out-of-state group was founded by former New York Gov. George Pataki and has also launched ads in New Hampshire against Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH).

And Which fearless print or teevee journalists in New Hampshire (4.00 / 1)
fearless print or teevee journalists in New Hampshire will put this story out before their public anywhere, let alone on a front page?

A liberal listens to a conservative and says "You may have a couple of points there.  Let's try to compromise.

A leftist listens to a conservative and says "Your ideas are ridiculous.  Shut up and listen."

I can't hear you, Ref (4.00 / 1)

Well, (0.00 / 0)
I talk about it!

A liberal listens to a conservative and says "You may have a couple of points there.  Let's try to compromise.

A leftist listens to a conservative and says "Your ideas are ridiculous.  Shut up and listen."

as a lefty (4.00 / 2)
which makes me a minority in the Democratic Party, I'm sick to death of being asked for contributions and volunteer time by folks who insult and criticize me the minute elections are over.

Leftists help centrists and even blew dogs win elections.  I'm increasingly disinterested in being part of the process - because of the kind of commentary you're offering up in your sig.

I'm also a bit puzzled (0.00 / 0)
by your sig, Ref. I'm not sure the exact difference between liberal and leftist, or why compromising with conservatives or telling them to shut up are the only alternatives, or why this point is so important that it needs to be semi-permanently etched in your sig on this left-leaning site.

Maybe you can elaborate.

Let me pile on (4.00 / 2)
I absolutely want the person representing me to say, when McConnell and Boehner try to end Social Security and Medicare: "Your ideas are ridiculous. Shut up."

Obama's Catfood Commission is the result of this fantasy-land idea of liberalism. The voters will rightfully punish the fools who practice it.

The question is why are these private corporations backing a (0.00 / 0)
failure?
The answer is that America's private corporations have made failure a central component in their endeavors.  It's been a gradual transition from "planned obsolescence" to "failure by design" to "creative destruction"-- this transition from aiming for success and excellence to acquiring monopolies and market dominance.  Driven by the idea that intentional destruction by man is a way to avoid the randomness (and unpredictability) of nature, they've given in to hubris (false pride).  To destroy makes man feel superior to mother nature, which suggests there's a deep-seated insecurity yearning to be satisfied.

All they've done here is promote intentional failure to the political arena.  Instead of destroying their competitors or acquiring them to take them apart (the Koch acquisition of Invista and Georgia Pacific are examples of both) they buy political failures and try to destroy the reputations of the more successful competitors.

It's not a new trend.  Back in the '80s, businesses delegated employees whose contribution in the office wouldn't be missed to attend Chamber of Commerce committee meetings and take part in "community service" organizations as part of the grooming process to keep the bench of candidates for public office full.
"They also serve who only sit and wait to be told what to do."

In some cases, of course, it's a matter of "up and out"--send them to Washington to get rid of them.

Money (0.00 / 0)
The trick to turning this around is to ask the simple question:  When is the last time corporate america did something with the general public's best interest in mind?
