Weekend Open Thread: It Gets Better

by: Dean Barker

Sat Oct 23, 2010 at 07:53:54 AM EDT

Some in the LGBT community aren't happy with this, no doubt influenced in part by the quick-as-mud pace of repealing DADT, DOMA, et al.

I'll say this: when I was the same age as the audience President Obama is addressing here, and bullied not because I was gay but because my friends were, President Reagan refused to speak the word "AIDS."  The subsequent inattention to the epidemic played a key role in causing tremendous suffering.

Truly, it gets better.  This is a Weekend Open Thread.

Reagan's actions were worse than that (4.00 / 1)
It's well-document that he prevented the nation's highest medical authority from even addressing the issue with the public.

With no cure and no vaccine, educating the public on how AIDS was transmitted, who was at risk, and how to protect oneself was the only way left to slow the spread of the disease....Nevertheless, for the first four years in office, the nation's top health officer was prevented from addressing the nation's most urgent health crisis, for reasons he insisted were never fully clear to him but that were no doubt political. During the early years of the epidemic, AIDS predominantly affected people--homosexuals and intravenous drug users--who, in the view of President Reagan and his domestic policy advisers, brought the disease upon themselves by engaging in immoral conduct, and who were in greater need of moral reform than of new health information or policies.

Look up "despicable" in the dictionary and you should find this.

there is a rant about this on RedHampshire. (0.00 / 0)
RedHampshire's bigoted and punctuation-challenged "Fairmind" went off on a rant entitled "Very Angry Dean Barker Admits His Homosexuality"

Quality writing going on over there. (4.00 / 1)
Many bloggers have wondered who is Dean Barker and if he is a real person or just a sordid congregation of three or four angry fringe left wing liberals like Kathy Sullivan, Ray Ray Buckley, Mikey Brunelle and Pammy Walsh.

Unattributed wonderings (4.00 / 2)
Not sure who the many wondering bloggers are, but there is something sad about a person so warped by jealousy, anger, obsessions and bad punctuation that he doesn't see the irony in hiding behind a pen name while asking if someone who has never hidden his identity actually exists.

You are a clever one (4.00 / 2)
responding to your phony creation.

Oh, wait, now the phony creation is responding to you.

Cleverer!

(I'd say it's even cleverer than admitting one is gay by stating one is not gay.)

The internets are indeed mysterious.

OMG (4.00 / 2)
Dean doesn't exist! I knew it!

Except for that time I, um, met him. But that could have been a body double.

And then there was the time you were on TV. And interviewed by the Wall Street Journal. But the Wall Street Journal is run by liberals, as we all know.

Too much for redhampshire? (0.00 / 0)
Looks like that crazy person's rant was too much for RedH, it has been pulled.
