Concord Monitor endorses Carol Shea-Porter!

by: Larry Drake

Tue Oct 26, 2010 at 05:07:01 AM EDT

( - promoted by Dean Barker)

In today's edition, the Concord Monitor endorses Carol Shea-Porter for re-election.  Here's the link:
http://www.concordmonitor.com/...

More (Dean): It's the integrity, stupid. From the endorsement:

In swing districts like Shea-Porter's, politicians concerned mostly with self-preservation are often inclined to compromise their convictions in an attempt to be all things to all voters. To her credit, Shea-Porter has remained true to herself. She is right on many of the big issues facing the country, and her constituents never have to guess how she will vote.

...Across the country and especially in New Hampshire, the 2010 campaign has featured highly disciplined candidates from both major parties spouting the worst sort of political jargon. They use the language of political brochures and advertisements, lingo that becomes nearly meaningless from repetition. Shea-Porter, on the other hand, talks like a regular person, even after four years in Washington. She speaks her mind plainly and with conviction - just one more reason she has earned our support.

Peace of Mind-- (0.00 / 0)
When you think of our rights to life, liberty and peace of mind, it's clear that Carol Shea-Porter knows all about the latter.  We not only don't have to guess how she will vote; we don't have to worry about it either.

Representatives, who protest that whatever they're doing is a "hard choice" and hurts them more than us, are not to be trusted.

The Right fears CSP (4.00 / 1)
The Right fears Carol Shea-Porter for the same reason they fear Nancy Pelosi, because she is strong, effective and liberal.

The Right is weak and they hate, detest and fear anything and anyone which is strong.

The Bumper Sticker Braintrust (0.00 / 0)
This part of politics drives me nuts.

Sometimes it's cute, e.g. Jim McMillan's "The Rent's Too Damn High." More often it is rote, e.g. generic GOPer "My opponent will raise your taxes."

The CM hit the nail on the head. Go Carol!

Whack-a-mole, anyone?

All part of the plan, my friend. (4.00 / 1)
The psychological dimensions of ideology have been known for years by conservatives.  They work hard to discredit government, liberals, and policy to create these feelings of disgust in the electorate.  Not only does this help depress voter turnout, but we can also see the positive link between disgust and more conservative viewpoints:

All Politics is Olfactory

Participants who were randomly positioned in front of a hand sanitizer gave more conservative responses to a survey about their moral, social and fiscal attitudes than those individuals assigned to complete the questionnaire at the other end of the hallway.

In another experiment one of us (Dr. Pizarro) was involved in, a foul ambient smell - emitted, unbeknownst to test subjects, by a novelty spray - caused people answering a questionnaire to report more negative attitudes toward gay men than did people who responded in the absence of the stench. Apparently, the slightest signal that germs might be present is enough to shift political attitudes toward the right.

Historical evidence abounds that the strategy of obfuscation, obstruction, and creating an environment of disgust has served Republican interests well.  No evidence exists that demonstrate that the electorate punishes for these behaviors.

Republicans have left a stench; hold your nose and vote for the Democrat. :)

The CM comments though (0.00 / 0)
.. are right now a pile of right-wing anti-Carol talking points plus crazy. Don't sane people get to comment on this too?

The age of the intertubes (0.00 / 0)
has released the crazies, Betsy.

Even just a few years ago, these folks were mostly out of sight and out of mind.  They now all own Google machines and can spread the Gospel according to Rand to pretty wide audiences.

I'd add that nobody does outrage quite like the right wing.  Masterful mentors like Rush, Beckerhead, and Faux News have opened Pandora's box.

50 years from now, this era will be viewed harshly.

If we're still around.
