UNION LEADER DOES NOT ENDORSE FRANK GUINTA

by: Dean Barker

Mon Nov 01, 2010 at 05:57:17 AM EDT

I'll revise and update if I'm wrong, but as of the morning before election day I do not see an endorsement of former Manchester Mayor and Republican congressional nominee Frank Guinta from the state's largest, most right-wing, most Manchester-centric newspaper.

The New Hampshire Union Leader has rejected Frank Guinta. (Of course the relentlessly right-wing UL would never endorse Carol - so let's not pretend there is some phony equivalence game to play here.)

Let me repeat that: the New Hampshire Union Leader has rejected Frank Guinta.

The most important and influential right-wing institution in the state of New Hampshire refuses to endorse the Republican nominee for Congress in its own district.

I can only imagine that, in an alleged wave that gives Republicans a chance to take over that congressional seat, the only thing keeping the Union Leader from doing its part to help the GOP would be the fact that Frank Guinta cannot adequately explain the ownership of the $355,000 he put into his campaign.

This tells me in no uncertain terms that, win or lose, the story of Frank Guinta's mystery money is NOT GOING AWAY.  And if he wins, New Hampshire could well be facing the shame of a disgraced congressman.

Let's make sure he doesn't win:

GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV!
Call NHDP at 603-225-6899 to find out how to help.
Call the Shea-Porter campaign at 603-531-9653 to find out how to help.GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV! GOTV!

One ugly possibility would be if the House ends up divided 218-217, with Guinta as the 218th member of the majority or (marginally less horrendous) the 217th member of the minority.  It could happen--- although I think Carol Shea-Porter will win, rendering the whole Guinta Mystery Money controversy moot.

Not moot (0.00 / 0)
Losing does not make an FEC complaint moot, or a request for a criminal investigation.  You don't get a pass on shoplifting just because they take the merchandise back from you befor eyo uleave the store.

losing does... (0.00 / 0)
Losing makes a Congressional ethics investigation moot.

But... you are absolutely right, Kathy, that Guinta can still be subjected to an FEC complaint: his losing campaign will still be audited, and the source of the mystery money would be something which the auditors should look into.

And the possible US Atty criminal investigation. (0.00 / 0)
And... if he's had all this money for years and years as he claims, the IRS might take an interest in seeing if he's acknowledged in in his tax returns.

I don't know what Mr. Guinta is thinking.  Win, lose or draw, this story is not going away.  It would have been far better for him to have addressed it back in the GOP primary.

Really quite stunning (4.00 / 1)
Most papers would either endorse the other candidate or at least state why they didn't endorse in the race.

This is a first (4.00 / 1)
The Union Leader doesn't endorse a candidate who would eliminate the Department of Education?

That's unheard of.

Gotta be more to this.
