Terie Norelli Elected Minority Leader

by: Jennifer Daler

Sat Nov 13, 2010 at 12:30:39 PM EST

Terie Norelli has been, by acclimation, unanimously named Minority Leader for the upcoming biennium after a vote where she won 53 votes to David Campbell's 38 to Kris Roberts'4. She is also the caucus candidate for Speaker of the House.

We have to do all we can to support those left standing in the state legislature. They are the mainstay of our firewall against the extremist agenda of the House Republican Alliance.

HRA priorities include a repeal of the gay marriage law; tax breaks for people who choose home or private schooling; allowing health insurance purchases across state lines... impeaching Commissioner of Education Virginia Barry; and requiring photo ID of all voters.

This is only the beginning, as there are Legislative Service Requests (LSRs) for everything from taking New Hampshire out of federal health care reform to doing away with child abuse laws, to taking the state totally out of education funding.

Republicans need to be reminded that just as every person (0.00 / 0)
is presumed innocent until proved otherwise, every citizen is presumed honorable until there is evidence to the contrary.
Republicans also need to be cautioned about indulging their segregationist tendencies.  Equality may not appeal to their need to be superior and exceptional, but it is the core principle upon which the nation is based.

Terie Norelli Will Do Great... (0.00 / 0)
...as Democratic leader, even with the decrease in numbers of members in the Democratic Caucus.  I'm pleased she won, and as I said in my separate Blog post three days ago when I urged her selection, she will use every word she speaks on the House floor to save the good things Democrats have already done, and do more good for our citizens.

David Campbell, who I've known since the 1970s, and Kris Roberts are very honorable Legislators too, and I know they will work with Terie and the rest of the House Democrats.  Each is smart and sharp, and Terie would be well-advised to use them as part of her team.  When Jim Craig edged out Terie by one vote for Democratic Leader in 2004 -- I had supported Terie that year too and made a nominating speech -- he turned and appointed those who hadn't supported him to his Leadership Team.  That's one reason why we did so much in 2005 and 2006 in the House despite our minority status.  That helped contribute to our success in November, 2006.

When you're few in numbers compared with the opposition you have to work smarter and stick together.  With Terie, David, Kris and others, we'll be okay.

"Health insurance purchases across state lines" (4.00 / 2)
That must make voters scratch their heads. "I get bills from Texas now."

As I understand it, this just means, let companies sell health insurance without any oversight by the state of New Hampshire.

If New Hampshire law says (and it does): "Insurers must let a college student keep her policy if she stops attending while dealing with a medical condition," the GOP would say "Nuh-uh. Just follow the rules in Texas, Big Insurance Company, or wherever you have the most power."
