Sloppy Journalism

by: Mike Hoefer

Really, how do "Reporters" and "Journalist" get away with stuff like this? How does it slip by Editors? (Emphasis mine)

Ray White, the owner of Cornerstone Benefit and Retirement Group, poses for a portrait. Ray is just one of many recently elected Republican state Senators who also owns a small business. Located in Bedford, White manages to balance the stresses of a small business alongside the demands of a Senate seat.
Concord Monitor Photo Caption
Excuse me, but Mr. White has not even been sworn in yet! How the heck can we possibly know if he will be able to balance the stresses of small business alongside the demands of a Senate Seat? It would be one thing to say "Hopes to....", but to talk about it as if it is present day is irresponsible/lazy/bad writing and gives accolades for something that has not yet been earned.

(Please note that Russell Prescott who has also yet to be sworn in, also balances the stresses of owning a small business with the demands of a state Senate seat)

and then there is this from the Fosters Daily Democrat

Banning earmarks has been a longtime goal of Tea Party and conservative Republicans.
How the heck can something be a "long time goal" of an organization that has been around for a year, year-and-a-half tops?

It's going to be a long two years... all of us need to ready to call B.S. when we see it.

What sloppy writing/reporting have you been seeing out there?

Cheer Up (0.00 / 0)
I don't think that the Tea Party is going to be with us much longer.  After all they are the descendents of the Know-Nothing Party and they only lasted for a few years.  However, they did cause a lot of problems.

Lots of material for a stand up routine (0.00 / 0)

How the heck can something be a "long time goal" of an organization that has been around for a year, year-and-a-half tops?

Excellent point.

I wouldn't call my addition sloppy journalism, but omitted journalism. I feel like Joe Miller and his disregard for the 'intent of the voter' standard in Alaska is not getting enough coverage.

Voters are a real nuisance. Elections would be so much (0.00 / 0)
neater if the opinion pollsters' conclusions were conclusive.

I suppose it isn't surprising (0.00 / 0)
given the push from many Tea Party activists to repeal the 17th Amendment, and go back to having Senators selected by statehouse politicians...

Ray White and the Girl Scouts (4.00 / 2)
Did the Concord Monitor article mention this blog post by Ray White upon the dismissal of Georg Anne Duval as assistant troop leader?

This development was the culmination of a long-standing battle between the organization and a couple of out-spoken leaders regarding the Girl Scout's promotion of sex education, abortion, and the gay agenda under the euphemism of "diversity and tolerance".

Mrs. Duval's problems began when she became aware of what she considers a liberal social agenda burgeoning in recent years within the Girl Scouts USA (GSUSA) movement. She had begun to chronicle this trend in letters to fellow church leaders and was about to give a public presentation on this subject when she was abruptly terminated this spring.

He concludes with

What are the Girls Scouts trying to hide? They claim a goal of asking people to "...Join with us as we change the world one girl at a time...", but one must apparently not dare to ask "change it into what?"

Think about that the next time you consider buying some of their cookies.

Think about the fact that the person who wrote this is now in the majority of a veto proof State Senate.

I'm Glad (0.00 / 0)
to see this.  It affirms to me that the GSA are not the uptight, religious-dominated jerks that the BSA are (at the national level, anyway!)

Sure, I voted for less government and less government spending...just NOT the parts that I benefit from!

Foster's Daily Democrat reported on a development proposal (0.00 / 0)
as UNH housing for students
http://www.fosters.com/apps/pb...
which isn't sponsored by UNH and can't be restricted to students.  Nor, as is suggested, will a project on the far western edge of town resolve problems with rowdy students in older in-town neighborhoods.  Of course, in this instance, the fault doesn't lie entirely with the reporters, since the story is merely restating aspirations as fact.

Time is of the essence.  Our journalists seem to have difficulty keeping past, present and future straight.  Also, there's the problem of taking the intent for the act.  That's how John McCain can declare the Iraq war as a 'win.'

Valley News Headline - Grafton 10 Recount Yields New Winner (0.00 / 0)
Sunday's paper couldn't get the House districts right.
Orford -- Two recounts in Grafton County House district races were completed Friday, with one decided exactly as it was on election night and the other flip-flopping a winner.

Libertarian Republican Bob Hull requested the Grafton 10 recount, and it came out with both winner Chuck Townsend and Bob having exactly the same vote counts they had on election night.

The more interesting news was in the Grafton 6. Democrat Jim Aguiar was re-elected in the initial count and the recount, but the recount gave C

"Take Back or Ford"? (4.00 / 1)
Is that like "Live Free or Die"?

Or "Live Free, Ordie"?

got my Blue Book right here (0.00 / 0)
returnees' occupations (mostly based on "Blue Book" profiles):

Barnes (R-Concord): "Restaurant Consultant"
Boutin (R-Merrimack): "Disabled (retired)" (I have no idea what he's retired from and he sure doesn't seem disabled to me.)
Bragdon (R-Milford): publisher
Carson (R-Nashua): graduate student & college instructor
d'Allesandro (D-Manchester): teacher & football coach
Gallus (R-Berlin): Realtor
Houde (D-Meriden): Attorney & law school teacher
Kelly (D-Keene): "Financial Advisor"
Larsen (D-Concord): "PR Consultant"
Lasky (D-Nashua): "Homemaker"
Merrill (D-Durham): non-profit administrator & legislative aide
Odell (R-Lempster): "Business"

Departing:

Cilley (D-Barrington): businessperson
DeVries (D-Manchester): firefighter
Downing (R-Salem): Police officer
Fuller Clark (D-Portsmouth): "Architectural & Historical Preservation Consultant"
Gilmour (D-Hollis): Nurse & healthcare administrator
Hassan (D-Exeter): Attorney
Janeway (D-Webster): "Investment Advisor"
LeTourneau (R-Derry): owner of motorcycle shop
Reynolds (D-Plymouth): Attorney
Roberge (R-Manchester): politician campaign manager/fundraiser
Sgambati (D-Tilton): public health consultant

Dean is probably thinking of Jackie Cilley, who has founded several successful businesses.  Kathy Sgambati is also a successful entrepreneur (who ironically was replaced by a non-entrepreneur,  UNH professor Jim Forsythe.)  Peggy Gilmour was the President of a hospital, but maybe that doesn't count as business experience.  Hassan & Reynolds are partners in small local law firms, but maybe that doesn't count as business experience either.

accountable (0.00 / 0)
I don't think we need to be hostile to the media. But is it is a tough state for Dems in the Media and we need to hold the media accountable for what the publish and let them know when we think they got it wrong.

The bigger problem isn't what they get wrong - (4.00 / 3)
but rather, what they don't cover at all.

Running these press releases maybe falls into that category.

a strange story I heard today from a reliable source (0.00 / 0)
One of the new state Senators showed up at the Legislative Office Building (or "LOB") today for orientation.  This was in his case the wrong place, although this was the right place for the House orientation. When told he should go to the State House for the Senate orientation, he asked, "Where's the State House?"  He did not know where the State House was, and he in fact had never even been there before today.

It's one thing not knowing where the Storrs Garage or the Upham-Walker House is, or even the LOB itself--- but not knowing where the State House is?  Yikes!

I hope this person runs his business better than he runs his political career.

here's some things I witnessed myself (0.00 / 0)
The House Republicans are also all supposedly brilliant businesspeople who are going to charge in and start running the government like a business.  But during orientation a group  of these brilliant businesslike Republicans were totally unable to grasp the distinction between the state and federal mileage plans, and got pretty snippy towards the legislative accounting staff who trying to explain.

In all fairness, the distinction between the two mileage plans is slightly confusing.  The state plan pays you a per diem for each day you are in Concord, based on the mileage from your home.  You don't have to drive your own vehicle, but it counts as taxable income.   This is intended for people who car pool and/or stay overnight.  the federal plan pays a higher rate and is non-taxable, but you only get it for miles that you yourself drive.  The Republicans got so frustrated trying to understand this (admittedly nontrivial) issue, they nearly rioted.

Also, at the beginning of the day, the new arrivals traditonally fill out  a biographical data sheet and have their picture taken for the Blue Book.  This book is (as was clearly explained in the orientation packet) a copyrighted work by a private company.  The legislature will make a small profit buying the books wholesale (when they come out later this winter) and selling them retail.  Much later, we are introduced to the House web site by the MIS chief.  He made the mistake of explaining that you can provide your picture and a capsule bio.  He was asked, Why can't we use the pictures we took this morning?  The answer being: because they are someone else's property. These businesslike capitalist Republicans were incredibly irked by the fact that they couldn't use the Blue Book picture for free.  A few Republicans once again almost rioted, especially after they learned that the "clips" (a PDF file of Union Leader & Concord Monitor clippings) can't be accessed from computers not on the State House network (because of copyright laws.)

I should add that only a tiny minority of the Republicans were behaving piggishly. The vast majority of them were being perfectly civil. But frankly I didn't see any Democrats joining in the piggish behavior, even though there are a few Democrats in the incoming class.
