Open Thread: Where's My Posh Government-Run Office?

by: Dean Barker

Sat Nov 20, 2010 at 07:02:16 AM EST

The infamous Frank Guinta, who campaigned on cutting government waste, looks disgusted that 64 other infamous frosh snagged a nicer gummit-run office than he did.

Since WMUR is still allergic to enabling embeds, you'll have to click here for it.

Don't worry, Rep.-Elect. While the look on your face makes it clear you prefer we taxpayers foot the bill for your nice things, I'm sure there's some money left in those mystery accounts to spruce up your so undesirable digs.

This is a Weekend Open Thread.

I have a question... (4.00 / 2)
unrelated to the extreme makeover of anyone's office:

When do we start planning for a Bash?

Was thinking maybe post-holiday season, January doldrums-ish?

Music makes it all worthwhile. I humbly suggest a Blues theme, and hereby volunteer my Blues services.

The Blues ain't nothing but a good Hamster feelin' bad.

Any takers?

Republicans believe government is bad - then they get into office and prove it.

how about (4.00 / 2)
in Peterborough?

I've been wanting to (4.00 / 2)
have one in Peterborough for a while. And I can think of a place, maybe GreyMike knows the same one, that would be a good venue.

Wuz you thinking (4.00 / 1)
Harlow's? Or...?

There's no lottery for your free, taxpayer-funded health insurance.

He got the votes.BTW I heard grousing from more than one Carol supporter that President Obama never called her after the election.Pindell's column yesterday put the kibosh on that meme.

Gov. Christie of New Jersey thinks (4.00 / 2)
"The public is more willing to accept pain and difficulty, more than they have ever been before."

Isn't that just grand?  People are willing to be abused.  So, of course, we have to take advantage of that.  Can't waste such an opportunity!

There are so many better things than this for which to criticize Guinta... (0.00 / 0)

100% disagree. (4.00 / 2)
This vignette is in miniature the essence of my complaint with Mr. Guinta.

He campaigns on cutting whole departments, but with an eye to the next election, among his first post-election statements is a show of support for heat welfare.

His explanation of the infamous bar brawl is at odds with the police report.

His description of the source of $355,000 dollars of fuel to his campaign is at odds with common sense.

The man who liked to say over and over again that "government is the problem" has a look of genuine disgust on his face that he didn't get a nicer office.  A real public servant who had real principles committed to shrinking government would relish winning that low number - it could be used as a public relations instrument to make his point.

The voters have granted him a victory in which he gets to live off their dole, a situation of significant power granted to a tiny number of Americans. Instead of the humility and grace that such an office demands, we get a peek into behavior reminiscent of Room Draw Day at the boarding school.

The right can say, and even lie, all they want about Carol.  But her integrity is untouchable.

Mr. Guinta, on the other hand, shows time and again that he is not a True Believer to the Tea cause but in fact a Grade A Phony.  Yet a phony who will still gleefully carry out its destructive policies.

Those are quite a few legitimate gripes. (4.00 / 1)
But Jon Stewart has a point about the level of knee-jerk partisanship.

Sure, Guinta is full of it on policy and campaign shenanigans, and those are worthy criticisms.  But that he wasn't thrilled to have a low pick of offices?  It's a stretch to say that's relevant because of his anti-government pandering.

If one of ours got a low number and wasn't happy about it, we'd neither notice nor care.

I'm all for defeating Guinta in the next election for every one of the many, many good reasons he deserves to lose--and I hope Carol Shea-Porter takes the seat back in 2012, because she deserved to win.  But we don't need to knock Guinta for every little meaningless thing; that's just petty.

A public servant's attitude toward public service, and (4.00 / 1)
scandal plagued Frank Guinta's especially, is not meaningless to me.

You're reading way too much into this.

when somebody tells you, effectively, you're full of shit and you Recommend the comment.

Evan Bayh Did The Deed! (4.00 / 1)
Someone has been planting wedges. But, Madame Secretary makes it plain:
QUESTION: Secretary, one final question. You made some news recently in Australia when you ruled out running again for office in 2012 and 2016. (Laughter.) Why?

SECRETARY CLINTON: Well, first of all, I love what I'm doing. I can't tell you what it's like, Chris, to every day get to represent the United States. And it's why I feel so strongly about every issue from START to Afghanistan.

QUESTION: Are you categorically saying that you are done with political office, elective office?

SECRETARY CLINTON: I have said it over and over again and I'm happy to say it on your show as well: I am committed to doing what I can to advance the security, the interests, and the values of the United States of America. I believe that what I'm doing right now is in furtherance of that, and I'm very proud and grateful to be doing it.

QUESTION: So you're done with elective office?

SECRETARY CLINTON: I am. I am very happy doing what I'm doing, and I am not in any way interested in or pursuing anything in elective office.

I'm going to blame Evan Bayh. Of course, I have nothing to go on. But, dear Hampster, this IS triangulation in America. Or, is it circulation?

Whack-a-mole, anyone?
