NH House leadership throws another GOP legislator under the bus

by: Mike Emm

Mon Feb 07, 2011 at 09:03:32 AM EST

( - promoted by William Tucker)

A press release from the NH House GOP office caught my attention. (Sorry, but for some reason, they decided not to post their own press release on their own website, so you have to go to NH Insider for the details). In the release, House leadership goes after a member of their own team, specifically Rep. Hoell of Dunbarton. He is no doubt one of the clowns that O'Brien was complaining about to Fahey in Sunday's UL.

Hoell's sin is his sponsorship of HB536, a bill about our  natural right to carry a firearm, openly or concealed, without a license.  Basically, the bill says every person, and by this I guess he means man, woman, child, and babe-in-arms, has the god-given right to strap on a gun anywhere and everywhere they like. Ditto for blackjacks, knives, and brass knuckles, in case you were wondering. A public official who infringes on your 'natural' right is in a heap of trouble: he or she will have to pay your court costs and will henceforth be barred from holding any public office in the state. These guys want you to know they are not fooling around!

Mike Emm :: NH House leadership throws another GOP legislator under the bus
Here's Boss O'Brien, berating a guy that probably helped get him elected Speaker:
I am disappointed that I was unable to convince Rep. Hoell to withdraw this poorly conceived bill that truly represents bad policy... This bill would make New Hampshire less safe and it would create an unacceptable risk for our citizens.

And his underling Bettencourt piles on:
After carefully reviewing House Bill 536, House leadership has made clear that we will oppose this bill that could undermine public safety in New Hampshire.

Ouch!

They were also able to strong arm two of the co-sponsors into disavowing all knowledge of the bill they co-sponsored. But not, interestingly, the House's constitutional scholar, Rep. Itse, who is perfectly fine sponsoring a bill that even his extremist leaders think is too extreme.

Another interesting fact: Jeb Bradley is a co-sponsor. Imagine that.

Getting crowded under that bus (4.00 / 3)
They threw Rep. Sorg under the bus, too, and he is not happy

A leading House Republican blasted his party leadership Friday for opposing his move to bar the Supreme Court from judging future state aid to public schools.

Rep. Gregory Sorg, R-Easton, said he thought the leadership of House Speaker William O'Brien, R-Mont Vernon, would line up behind his bill (HB 233), which was taken up by the new Special Committee on Education Funding Reform.

"This bill was on leadership's agenda, and now they are saying the Republicans are supposed to kill it," Sorg said. "It's very strange. I was not even informed of this, wasn't consulted at all, and I've been working eight years on the issue."

O'Brien made Sorg vice chair of judiciary, he must have known, or should have known, this was Sorg's priority bill when he talked to him about serving as vice chair.

When oh when.. (4.00 / 1)

will the Democrats stop throwing these clowns at poor Boss O'Brien?

Apparently, Republican are pro-abortion (0.00 / 0)
when it comes to legislation.  How many bills can the Republican majority abort and how much will it cost?

More news from under the bus... (0.00 / 0)
The Judiciary Committee is divided into two divisions, Policy and Administration.  As originally constituted, the Chair (Robert Rowe) Vice Chair (Gregory Sorg) and Clerk (Nancy Elliott protege Lenette Peterson) were on both divisions, making one of the divisions 10 members with only 2 Ds and the other 11 members with only 2 Ds.

When we protested that this violated House Rules which require representation on committees to be proportional to overall House representation, which is currently 25%, the response was to remove Rep. Rowe from one of the two divisions, and to remove Rep. Sorg from both divisions, thus leaving him as the only member of the Judiciary Committee who does not have a regular seat on either division.

Those of you who are good at math will notice that the Ds are still only 2 out of 9 on each division, which does not work out to 25%, but given that Judiciary has only 4 Ds out of 18 members, it is at least proportional to the whole of the committee.

Ohhhh Lucy... (4.00 / 2)
...every time I hear you write about the Judiciary Committee, I feel so sorry about our Dems there.  I know you're doing good things to counter the opposition, though.  Each of the 4 Democrats is worth 4 of them, so you actually outnumber them -- at least in intelligence, vision, and wisdom.

And another bus question... (0.00 / 0)
Does anyone have any idea why, according to the House web site, Rep. Tony Soltani is not listed on any committee whatsoever?

His page carries a description of the Judiciary Committee, but he is not on our roster, nor, apparently, on any other committee, either.

he isn't even on Petitions & Redress (0.00 / 0)
Soltani isn't even on my committee, the Petitions & Redress Committee, which has no work to do.

[ Parent ]
Wow, that's even fewer bills (0.00 / 0)
...than Constitutional Review and Statutory Recodification.  Gary Richardson reports they have one bill there, one of the firearms ones, which, among other things, would make it a crime for the US attorney to prosecute federal gun offenses if the gun in question was manufactured in Nh.  Or something like that.

So between those two committees, there are about 36 House members who are not working directly on issues that are of critical importance to our citizens.  Of course, the flip side is that it frees you up to monitor and comment on the many other bills currently being heard in various other committees.

I'm glad to see my new Rep JR Hoell so hard at work. Having stood next to him for 8 hours holding signs at the polls, maybe you get a sense of why I've been so exorcised...it was clear the degree of wackadoo coming down the pike...as to the relationship betwen him and Rep Iste, they are both engineers, so they have a lot in common I suppose.

I resemble that remark. My grandfather was an (0.00 / 0)
engineer and so is one of my sons.

It used to be said that "those who can't, teach."  More accurate, I suspect, is "those who can't, preach."  And those who can't meditate, legislate.

But Hannah... (4.00 / 3)
...your Grandfather and son likely were real engineers.  Hoell and Iste are, at best, wannabe social engineers.

Your Rep has quite a fascination with guns, doesn't he? (4.00 / 1)

If you look at the list of bills he is sponsoring, most have something to do with firearms.

One of his bills, HB542, is kind of odd. It says among other things that people who home school their children have the right to tattoo or brand them, prostitute them, or otherwise endanger them. I don't know which is scarier: that he wants to do this  or that he doesn't know that he is doing this.

It might be a good idea to keep a record of your Reps bills for the next election.

Why aren't they posting their press releases (0.00 / 0)
on their own website?  Why use the NH Insider site?  This is creepy.

Timing issue (0.00 / 0)

They have now. My guess it was just the private sector (NH Insider) being more nimble than the public sector (NH House Republican Office).

;-)
