Sullivan Won't Seek Re-Election as Party Chair

by: Laura Clawson

Sat Dec 16, 2006 at 14:40:22 PM EST

New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Kathy Sullivan has announced that she will not run for a fifth term.  And really, how much more of a high point could she find to step down from than this November's sweeping wins and the settlement in the phonejamming case?  The Democratic party is clearly much, much stronger in New Hampshire now than it was in 1999 when she became chair.

After we thank Sullivan for her service, the question becomes who will take her place.  And that will be something to keep an eye on.

This is really bad news (0.00 / 0)
Sullivan has done an outstanding job and has really brought the party together. She's been the "rock" for us over the past 8 years.

Sullivan's Replacement (0.00 / 0)
Kathy Sullivan has done a terrific job turning our party around and turning our state around.  As much as the past eight years have been due to the hard work of Shaheen, Lynch, Hodes, and Shea-Porter, it was Kathy Sullivan who piloted the ship.

As for her replacement according to the Union Leader:

Long-time state Democratic activist Raymond Buckley will bid to succeed Kathy Sullivan as state party chair when an election of officers is held in March.

Buckley is currently the Vice Chair of the NHDP, Chair of the Manchester City Democrats, and Executive Director of the NH Senate Democratic Caucus.  He was instrumental to the pickup of 6 seats in the Senate, was a Lieberman supporter in 2004, and Gore supporter in 2000.

As far as I know, the period for securing nominations ended today.  Can anyone at the State Committee meeting in Manchester tell us if anyone else is throwing their hat in the ring?  And anyone with thoughts on Buckley?

One point of interest (0.00 / 0)
Buckley is openly gay, and active in gay issues.

It appears to have just opened. (4.00 / 2)

I haven't heard of any other candidates - but I hope some materialize. I know that Mr. Buckley has been a hard worker, but he's also alienated a lot of people. The state doesn't stop at Exit 15 - and some day I hope the Democratic Party hierarchy comes to realize, and will work to include the northern tier of the state.

I swear I saw a story... (0.00 / 0)
...I can't find a link, though, in which a prominent local Republican hoped that the GOP could recruit Sullivan to chair their party when her term with the Dems ends.

Great parting shot. (0.00 / 0)
Globe:

In her chairwoman's report Saturday, she celebrated the Democratic gains, and said there is more to do in preparation for the 2008 elections.

"I have one thing to say to (Sen.) John E. Sununu," she said. "You're next."

Don't hesitate to contact me (4.00 / 4)
If you have a question, idea or suggestion to make a stronger NH Democratic Party please do not hesitate to contact me. My email is RepBuckley@aol.com or you can call me at the NHDP office at 225-6899. If I am honored to be elected at the State Chair I want to hear from everyone. Our challenge for 2008 and beyond is do all we can, together, to hold on to our gains and expand them - especially when it comes to Sununu and Gregg. I come from the grassroots and I know what can be accomplished if we are included, challenged and empowered. No one person or small group can accomplish what needs to be done - each of us is needed. I hope you will join me in this exciting effort.

2012 starts today.

Thank You (0.00 / 0)
Thank you for joining our community.

I am sure you will be hearing from us in the future.

Thank you for coming to Blue Hampshire. (4.00 / 1)
We are very interested in having this place be a forum for everyone, including elected reps and party officials.

I especially share your commitment to defeating Sununu and Gregg.  Defeating our junior senator is a top priority of this site.
