Don't Make Us Work Till We Die

by: susanthe

Wed Apr 20, 2011 at 17:41:30 PM EDT

There's a new website and video being launched later tonight by the Strengthen Social Security coalition.

A number of  events will be taking place around the country next week, on April 27 and 28. The theme for these events is: Don't Make Us Work Till We Die. Seniors will be dressing up in the uniform of their former occupation to illustrate the folly of raising the retirement age.

There's a map of upcoming events, as well as a lot of good resources, a petition to sign, and a virtual rally, for folks who don't have an event in their state. Like NH.

The stakes are higher than ever. Rep. Ryan's Repulsive Republican Budget will privatize Medicare, slash Medicaid, and use the Social Security treasury to pay down the deficit.

We cannot allow this to happen.

Raising the retirement age won't hurt Charlie Bass or Flip Floppin' Frank Guinta - but it will hurt the people who have worked in professions that meant physical labor. I worked in restaurant kitchens for 20 years. I have a shoulder problem, and several other repetitive motion injuries. There are millions of people who are paying the physical price for the work they did.

People over the age of 55 are less likely to find work - never mind work till they're near 70. Republicans have always hated the New Deal, and they're taking a run at killing it for good.

We cannot allow this to happen.

It's important that we make a lot of noise, enough so that Obama and the cowardly Democrats who are willing to "negotiate" on this subject learn that if they negotiate with these terrorists, there will be hell to pay.

In the interest of full disclosure, this post is part of the Campaign For America's Future state blogger's network project. I'm one of the bloggers participating in the project.

"16 Tons" (4.00 / 2)

A Merle Travis song - (4.00 / 1)
Not to slight Tennessee Ernie Ford, bless his little pea-pickin' heart. But the top-shelf versions of coal mine tunes are from Merle, who wrote and sang 16 Tons before the cover.

I hope when I die
And the ages shall roll -
My body will darken and turn into coal.

Then I'll look from the door
of my heavenly home,
And pity the miner,
digging my bones.

- Dark as a Dungeon

(Is it country? Folk? Jazz? Spiritual?  Well, yeah, of course.)

Drill, ye tarriers, (4.00 / 1)
drill.  ( Yeah, I know Sarah Palin has given new, um, I wouldn't go so far as to say meaning, but perhaps context  to the word.)

....Last week a premature blast went off
And a mile in the air went Big Jim Goff
So drill, ye tarriers, drill.

 It's work all day
For the sugar in your tay
 Down beside the railway
 And drill ye tarriers, drill.

When next payday came around,
Jim Goff a dollar short was found.
He asked what for, came this reply,
"Yer docked for the time ye was up in the sky!"
So drill, ye tarriers, drill.

Hard Labor at Sixty (4.00 / 2)
I'm sixty two now. Last year I climbed a lot of ladders while painting houses part time. I managed it, but it's becoming a novelty to see how long I can stay physically active like a young person. I also have severe bouts of vertigo that make it difficult to walk in a straight line at times.

Eight more years of this? I think "novelty" is going to give way to something else sooner or later.

And I'm lucky. I've got great genes on both sides of my family. All of my friends my age are experiencing the wear and tear of decades on Earth. Joints are giving way, fingers are arthritic and Jezum crow we can't remember where we put the damn hammer anyway.

I'd love to see our labor challenged Republican lawmakers climbing onto a second story roof at any age. The only callouses they've ever had are from shaking hands with lobbyists.

I'm amazed (0.00 / 0)
you can climb a ladder with vertigo.  I can't climb one further than a couple of rungs without getting dizzy and nauseous and I don't have vertigo.
I think anyone who votes to raise the retirement age should be forced to spend a year doing physical work like painting houses.  And living on food stamps, and without health insurance, and all the other things they want to take away from us because they think we are coddled.  We can set up some camps on an island, preferably in a cold climate, and they have to put in their year before they are allowed back into Congress.
Get the money out of campaigns.  Stop coddling our legislators.
