Political Scoop

"Politics ain't beanbag" - Finley Peter Dunne

Pindell last week (4.00 / 9)
Tuesday will feature the first special election for the House since last year's elections. Even Speaker O'Brien says the election will serve as a referendum on him and a reaffirmation that voters meant what they meant in November. Going back to 2004, the district votes 7 percent more Republican than Democrat. Given that, how should we define victory for either side? First, it's inaccurate, a myth and a cop out to suggest that this race will be driven by local issues. This month, all politics is local Concord. Nor will be it driven by personality: neither candidate - Republican Peter Kucmas or Democratic former State Rep. Jennifer Daler - is recruiting triumphs, but this is the New Hampshire House we are talking about. But special elections are highly unpredictable with low turnout (right Lynne Blakenbeker?). The bottom line: Republicans can and should win by any margin possible, and if they don't, it will be a huge story.

Pindell's email: (4.00 / 4)
In a huge upset Democrat Jennifer Daler has defeated Republican Peter Kucmas in a special election for the New Hampshire House of Representatives 58 percent to 42 percent.

The seat is in the 16th most Republican House District of out of the 103 districts statewide and the home district to Republican House Speaker Bill O'Brien.

To know the Speaker's agenda is to abhor the Speaker's agenda. You have sent a powerful message Jenn and the repercussions are going to be seen in the Senate, they have no reason to go along with the HOUSE!

the turnout compare with regular election years?  You know the Repubs will spin this as a result of "Low Turnout" or "Lack of Voter Interest."

Relative Turnout (0.00 / 0)
While turnout yesterday was off the charts for a special election, it was much smaller than a general election. In 2010, the fourth place finisher in the district received 3,092 votes. Jen ran in both 2010 and 2008, receiving 2,497 in '10 and 3,512 in '08. Neither was enough to win.

For official election results, check the Secretary of State's Elections Division Web site.

Absolutely WOW! (4.00 / 7)
Congratulations Jennifer, and to all who helped.

And congratulations to the voters of that district who wouldn't be bullied and have spoken out now that they know the truth about those who they chose last year to "represent" them.

Elections have consequences.

People are paying attention (4.00 / 9)
Ever since the vote to allow guns in the State House, with every new outrage, we've been asking "are people paying attention?"

Oh, yeah. They are paying attention.

Congratulations, everyone - job well done!

Republican Liberty Caucus NH on Results (4.00 / 11)
In April, Republican Liberty Caucus NH Chairman Andrew Hemingway emailed activists and wrote:

"If the progressives pull off a victory, they will claim that this is a repudiation of the Republican agenda, and it will be seen as a direct hit to Speaker O'Brien and the cause of liberty."

Note to Andrew: Thanks.

CONGRATULATIONS JENNIFER! (4.00 / 13)
I'm so proud of you!!!

I don't know what is more awesome:

* that NH's newest Rep-Elect is a BHamster;

* that this happened in O'Brien's district;

* that this is the 16th most GOP district in the state;

* that turnout was so great.

* that not even scolds like Fergus Cullen who tried to downplay expectations yesterday can ignore the huge spread.

Woo-hoo!

Astounding and outstanding. (4.00 / 6)
This is so fantastic. Congratulations, Jennifer!

A friend from Mont Vernon says (4.00 / 9)
That the canvassing of irate teachers played a big role in the outcome.

Republicans forget that most people like their kid's teachers and their kid's schools. They've been so long in their "public work is theft" Ayn Rand bubble that they've forgotten this. Yeah, we get grumpy about them sometimes, but in the end we're partners with our local teachers. And we know that generally they are NOT particularly politically active, so when we see that, it makes us think.

This is important, because last I checked there were teachers all over the state, and I think

* They'll still be here in 2012
* They'll still be irate
* They'll still be canvassing
* They'll still be trusted several degrees of magnitude more than anyone the GOP can put at your door.

If I was a Republican, I would think about that a little bit, and then I would start putting together a vote of no confidence for O'Brien as soon as humanly possible.

One thousand 4s for this: (4.00 / 6)
And we know that generally they are NOT particularly politically active, so when we see that, it makes us think.

Obviously I don't have data to present, just the observations of my own life as a teacher.  I am amazed at just how more aware and active teachers have become since January.  Something has crystallized.

NHDP statement (4.00 / 3)
New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley's Statement on Democrats Victory in the Special Election

Concord, NH -  New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Ray Buckley issued the following statement on Democratic candidate Jen Daler's stunning victory in the Hillsborough District 14 special election.

"Jen Daler's massive victory tonight is a complete and total rejection of the reckless Republican agenda that Bill O'Brien has been forcing upon Granite Staters.  In one of the most Republican districts in the entire state, New Hampshire voters turned out in historic numbers to oppose this new out of control Republican majority.   Over 20% of eligible voters came to the polls today, far exceeding the turnout in any previous special election for state Representative in New Hampshire history.

"The results tonight are a loud and clear message; right to work for less, defunding and destroying public education, the irresponsible House Republican budget, and the rest of the Republican job killing agenda of striping away Granite Staters fundamental rights is at odds with New Hampshire values."

but this sure makes the energy level go up, and up, and up and up.  Thanks, Jen, for running, for standing up.  And thanks to all the people who canvassed and called, etc., and the voters who came out on a chilly, rainy day to claim their place, and chart the course for the rest of NH from now til 2012.

Landrigan: kick in shins (4.00 / 2)
It's a big kick in the shin for O'Brien, who lost his seat to Daler in 2006 and wanted to replace his personal friend Mead with a loyal Republican.

It's a bigger kick in the behind for the New Hampshire Republican State Committee under new Chairman Jack Kimball.

"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."  Franklin D. Roosevelt

Nice, (4.00 / 3)
but in my own view the severity of the kick is reversed - this was a repudiation of O'Brien's agenda more than it was indicative of Kimball's incompetence at elections:

Go Jen! I knew you would do it.

Hope there's enough left in the coffers to get you a gas mask, you're gonna need it in Concord. Maybe a hazmat suit, too; given the level of toxicity under that venerable dome.

Hoping for a similar result here in Hills 03 when our time comes, keep us in mind, folks!

check out Maine's special election...it is happening there too! Dill is an outspoken liberal (0.00 / 0)
From the AP last week:
AUGUSTA, Maine - A Maine state representative from Cape Elizabeth is going to become the newest member of the Maine State Senate.

Rep. Cynthia Dill received 68 percent of the vote in a special election Tuesday for the district that covers Cape Elizabeth, South Portland and Scarborough.

The Portland Press Herald says Dill defeated Republican Louis Maietta Jr. of South Portland by 5,056 votes to 2,405.

The election heated up in recent days, with Democrats attacking Maietta's personal finances and Republicans attacking Dill as part of the liberal establishment responsible for high taxes and job losses

For more context check out the story in the Portland Press Herald by Bill Nemitz about Dill's victory... Daler and Dill have much in common beyond last names that begin with the letter D and democrat next to their names...they share progressive ideas

DNC Chair"s Statement (0.00 / 0)
DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz: Tuesday's Election Results in Florida and New Hampshire are Result of Extreme Policies Being Pursued by GOP Throughout the Country

Washington - Last night's election results in Jacksonville, Florida and New Hampshire are the direct result of extreme policies being pursued by the GOP across the country, said DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Republicans lost a New Hampshire State House seat in a heavily GOP district as well as the mayor's race in Jacksonville, Florida, a race that political analysts and partisans from both parties said was the GOP's to lose.  DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement after Tuesday's election results in Florida and New Hampshire:

"Democrats in Florida and New Hampshire outperformed expectations in two telling electoral contests.  Mayor-elect Alvin Brown secured an historic victory for Democrats in the Jacksonville mayor's race - the first Democrat to hold the office in twenty years. By working with broad support from Democrats, Independents and traditionally Republican voters, Mayor-elect Alvin Brown built a message and campaign that spoke to all of Jacksonville. And in one of the most Republican districts in New Hampshire, Democrat Jennifer Daler won in a race that drew remarkable turnout.  New Hampshire voters last night rejected the extreme policies of the Republican State House majority.

"If last night's results prove anything, it's that the far right wing positions taken by Republicans like Rick Scott, the State House majority in New Hampshire and Congressional Republicans are being rejected by voters casting real and meaningful votes.  Republicans across the country have over-played their hand, and voters last night reacted. As long as Republicans in Washington and across the country continue to promote unwise and unpopular policies like ending Medicare as we know it to protect tax breaks for Big Oil and the wealthiest Americans, they shouldn't be the least bit surprised by election results like we saw last night."
