Report: News of the World Is Shutting Down

by: JimC

Thu Jul 07, 2011 at 11:55:39 AM EDT

Amazing.

http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011...

The scandal-hit British tabloid News of the World will shut down after Sunday's issue, its owner, News International, told CNN Thursday.

Journalists at News of the World, a tabloid that is the world's top-selling English-language newspaper, have been accused of hacking into the mobile phone account of missing British teenager Milly Dowler, intercepting messages in search of news.

Don't mess with people's phones, I guess. Unless you're the government.

On the bright side (0.00 / 0)
This will really show the rank and file News of the World staff that had nothing to do with this.

We need some new media (0.00 / 0)
bad.

Can't say I'll be sad to see it go. (0.00 / 0)
Watching a piece of the Murdoch clan's slimefest fall apart is rather cathartic, really.

Only the left protects anyone's rights.

it's kind of shocking (0.00 / 0)
The News of the World has been around since 1843 and is a big part of the British cultural landscape.  That most British of all British rock bands, Queen even named an album after the paper.  It's like the National Enquirer, People Magazine & USA Today all rolled into one.

I am wondering why Murdoch is shutting the paper down over this one incident.  This won't stop him from being sued.

One incident? (0.00 / 0)
You need to read up on this. They hacked voice mails of royal family, politicos, celebs, families of terrorism victims, families of slain soldiers, and may have paid police for inside info. This is a multitude of incidents that are beyond creepy.

It's not kind of shocking, it is disgusting.

but still... (0.00 / 0)
It's not like Murdoch to take responsibility.  There has to be something more to this shutdown than a sudden conscience attack.  There's gotta be a scam.

it's not like any CEO to take responsibility (0.00 / 0)
I find it implausible that any CEO of any large multinational corporation would take any responsibility for anything.  And when I consider that this particular CEO happens to be Rupert Murdock, the man behind FoxNews and dozens of other travesties, it becomes impossible to for me to believe even for a nanosecond that there isn't some ulterior motive behind the closing of the News of the World.  I don't see how it could be anything as simple as a mere conscience attack.

Read the NYTimes (4.00 / 1)
It's been providing coverage all week.

Murdoch wants to buy control of BSkyB, the British satellite tv network. He doesn't want to fire his friend Rebecca Brooks, who runs his British newspaper division. He wants to keep the Prime Minister in office (Camerons former press aide has now been arrested). And, he has another paper that can pick up the tabloid coverage.

Closing this paper is intended to stop the bleeding in Britain so that the revulsion doesn't bring down the rest of his British operations.

The fallout (0.00 / 0)
From this could be huge. It could bring down Cameron. His Communications Minister, I believe, worked at this rag. It will be a stain on the Murdoch empire, and could easily taint every despicable, slimy report they issue. It will be interesting to see what information starts cascading out once the arrests are made.

Doesn't Andrew Breitbart do this kind of sleazy spying routinely?
