Charlie Bass: What, Me Worry?

by: William Tucker

Wed Jul 27, 2011 at 07:30:07 AM EDT

The telephone switchboard at the Capitol is being flooded with calls as Americans contact their members of Congress about the debt ceiling fight.

But don't expect to get Rep. Charlie Bass on the line this afternoon. He's got more important things to do. He'll be at Tortilla Coast in Washington for a big-ticket fundraiser. The man who raised over 75% of his contributions last quarter from corporate and leadership PACs -- but was still outraised by Democrat Ann Kuster -- isn't letting the debt crisis slow down his gravy train.

The PACs will cough up $1,000 - $2,000 each for the privilege of attending. Mere individuals can get in for $500 - $1,000. Pricey tacos.

The only action possible (4.00 / 2)
is to double down on support for Annie. Charlie's constituents are all in places other than NH.

They. Don't. Care.
We do.
Rinse, repeat.

Riiiight (4.00 / 1)
Bass was just on the radio this morning saying how much he wants the HCR implementations to be put off so the 2012 elections can be a referendum.  In other words, "I have nothing else that will get me elected, I need to be opposed to HCR!"

As Grey Mike said, we need to work VERY hard to get Annie elected.

"We start working to beat these guys right now." -Jed Bartlet

Is that pricey. for Congress? (0.00 / 0)
It sounds high, but the prices of even local fundraisers shock me these days. I expect a $25 minimum, but I find the "Suggested Donation" often starts at a hundred. Too rich for my blood.

It's extortion by remote control. Entities that don't "contribute" (0.00 / 0)
are noted as "un-supportive" and dismissed the next time an issue of concern to them shows up on the radar.
The Capitol Hill Gang are playing citizens, community groups, productive corporations and the ubiquitous middlemen (who have plenty of time to do their wheeling and dealing on the golf course) against each other.

When Frankie and Charlie visit with major employers in their districts, their message is simple: "tell the folks they'd better vote right or your contracts and subsidies are in the toilet."  And, sad to say, American enterprise has gotten so used to sucking at the public teat and being buttressed by trade agreements and tax abatements and revenue adjustments and depletion allowances, etc. that they are incapable of standing on their own two feet.

I mean, what kind of system gives some people free access to natural resources, lets them exploit them in the most wasteful way, and then compensates them when they are all gone?  One is reminded of the murderer of his parents who pleads sympathy for him 'cause he's now an orphan.
