NH-Gov Poll Results

by: Mike Hoefer

Thu Oct 06, 2011 at 13:15:16 PM EDT

One week later with, nearly 300 votes cast, three potential candidate separate themselves from the pack. Hassan, Connolly, and Cilley seem to have the early enthusiasm of the Netroots.

With 11 month months to go to the primary certainly many things can change. Also keep in mind (AFAIK) only Hassan has taken actual steps towards candidacy with the establishment of a PAC (and Website) to collect campaign funds.

* Maggie Hassan - 88 votes (30.14%)
* Mark Connolly - 79 votes (27.05%)
* Jackie Cilley - 73 votes (25%)
* Undecided - 19 votes (6.51%)
* Steve Marchand - 18 votes (6.16%)
* Gary Hirshberg - 10 votes (3.42%)
* John Kacavas - 4 votes (1.37%)
* Other - 1 votes (0.34%)

Great discussion in the comment thread as well. Most comments ever for a three word diary?

We hope that BlueHampshire will be an open and productive sounding board and discussion commons during the campaign cycle for this important office.

For our next poll we would like to gauge your sense of the priority of the issues facing the Dem Nominee.  Please use this thread to "Nominate" your issue to be included in the November Poll.

Math? (0.00 / 0)
How is that a thousand votes? That's not even three hundred votes cast, according to those numbers.

Only the left protects anyone's rights.

There are three types of people in this world; (4.00 / 2)
Those that know math, and those that don't.  :>)

In the immediate aftermath of Since the start of the financial crisis, the Fed/Treasury lent, spent, or guaranteed $28 $29 trillion to save the banking system.

The Math Works (0.00 / 0)
You take the number of votes for each candidate (i.e. 88 votes), multiply by the percentage of that vote (for example, 30.14%), divide by the number of total candidates including "other" and "undecided" (8), then add all the numbers together, multiply by a factor of 8 candidates, including "other" and "undecided," divide that by the number of people participating in the poll, and you'll get over 1,000.

After the Baldi-zero nonsense, I thought we needed my try at humor on this beautiful Fall day.

Nearly 300! (4.00 / 1)
Sorry written too quick! Diary has been edited updated to reflect "Nearly 300" vs 1000.

Jobs (4.00 / 1)
As in how many were lost due to GOP shenanigans, and how Democrats wouldn't have allowed that to happen.

While this is not MY top priority, it will be front and center during the campaign. We MUST have a strong candidate on the jobs issue...

progress (4.00 / 3)
When I was a wee lass in the 50's and 60's, our national dialogue included frequent mentions of progress and goals. We were going to put a man on the moon, etc.

Now there is no mention of progress. Now we have a 19th century infrastructure in the 21st century, and no one willing to even acknowledge the needs of the future.

What ever happened to those goals, those dreams of the future? Whatever happened to progress?

Also: Military spending, war, and US global military imperialism.

...Military spending, war, and US global military imperialism.

Also: Perpetual tax cuts for the terribly oppressed extremely wealthy. And a rejection of any interest in "promot(ing) the general welfare" by said elites.

Infrastructure (4.00 / 3)
New Hampshire has for too long acted like a one-trick pony, relying almost entirely on the lack of a sales or income tax in order to attract businesses, residents and shoppers.  That pony is getting tired, and while we can debate the merits of changing the state's tax structure elsewhere, any candidate for governor needs to address New Hampshire's outdated infrastructure.

The Memorial Bridge is out for the next two years in Portsmouth.  Manchester is the only "satellite city" not to be linked to Boston by commuter rail.  It's also one of the largest metropolitan areas not served by Amtrak.  Roads and bridges throughout the state are crumbling.  Public transit in the state's largest cities--including the towns and cities in 400,000-person Manchester-Nashua area--are disjointed and inconvenient at best, and a joke if we're being less generous.

As Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont invest in their infrastructure, New Hampshire is being left behind.  No one cares if there's no sales tax if they can't cross the bridges to get to New Hampshire, and businesses don't want to set up shop in a state whose legislators refuse to offer a rail connection between downtowns and the airport, let alone to the big city nearby.  Young people and college graduates don't want to live in a place where they have to drive everywhere all the time, and where that reliance on cars leaves downtowns, villages and neighborhoods dead.

Infrastructure is a quality-of-life issue (not to mention a safety one), but it's also an economic development issue.  Whether a candidate supports the existing tax structure, something different or even an open conversation on taxes, they have to understand and express that relying solely on the crutch of low taxes is not going to cut it anymore.

One Issue? (4.00 / 2)
- Abolition of Capital Punishment
- Protection (and Federal Expansion) of Gay Marriage
- Protecting a Woman's Right to Choose
- Increasing Tax Revenue in unconventional ways (yeah, I'm talking about casinos)
- Getting the money back for the most at risk people in our population, not the least of which are our severely disabled kids.

And on, and on, and on....

And Gambling! (0.00 / 0)
It's one thing for a legislator to want to pollute NH with gambling, it's quite another for the chief executive to also support it.

We need to find out where each stands on this crucial issue.Our valuable NH identity is at stake.

Maggie Hassan Appoints Political Director (0.00 / 0)
Just got an email from Wyatt Fore about his new position as Political Director. Congrats Wyatt and good move Maggie!

note to close readers: this might be sarcastic so think twice before reading to candidates for use in their attacks on each other
